Eagle Scouts are returning their badges to protest the Boy Scount policy banning gays

I didn't know this when I posted the thread, Someone needs to earn a merit badge in tolerance… but a number of Eagle Scouts are returning their badges in protest of the BSoA decision to continue banning gays.

There is an article on MSNBC but even more compelling is the Tumblr account which is collecting pictures of the returned medals and the letters accompanying them. You can view those *HERE*.

Do you think this protest will help convince the BSoA to be more inclusive?

I find it very admirable, and it illustrates perfectly the merits of this organisation, and the people within it. That said, I don't think it'll convince them much. Unless this provides a great uproar in the press.

I can't say if it will actually do any good against the ban, but I read the article about this on Yahoo a week ago and it made my day.

And the survival skills I've heard you learn in organizations like the Boy Scouts are essential to everyone, regardless of gender/race/sexual orientation/etc. so to not include a particular group is kind of silly.

Having known a few Eagle Scouts, these young men are giving up YEARS of almost impossible to keep up with work and community service for these young would-be-boyscouts. It's very powerful, because I know how much it meant to these young men who were able to make it to be an Eagle Scout.

I think it's great, but that it needs to be all over the media. It's a BIG DEAL!

No I don't believe that giving back the badges will make the BSOA more inclusive... its what they want right... "to get rid of the gays" giving back by giving back the badges they are giving into the BSOA

has any one been to a Boy Scout meeting?
I worked with a kid a few years back and part of my job was to socialize him.. I thought bringing him to the BS would help... it felt more like a cult... A good o'l Christian Cult

I dont think it will make Boy Scouts as a whole change, but it is a great thing they are doing.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is a HUGE deal in the boy scout world. very few make it that far, so returning your badges is an amazing sacrifice on their part. Unfortunately, I don't think it will make much of a difference.

It's an amazing sacrifice, and hopefully the senior leadership will get their heads out of the sand and enter the 21st century, where most people know Gay is not the same as Pedophile
