I don't think they're tacky (at least in the right situation) but I'm just not a fan of the way baseball hats look. They don't suit my style. I wear a broadbrimmed straw hat when I go to the beach.
Ball caps that are obviously used and loved, cute. It's almost necessary that a sports team be featured. They look great on anyone that isn't "trying" to wear it. If you just wear one, it works.

Trucker hats or ball caps that say "I'm so Hot" or some other stupid phrase or random rap lyric and have their own hat box because god-forbid the brim should be bent or the label come off, lame. Yes, that run on sentence should capture the disdain I have for that particular accessory.

I love my sprayed trucker hat that I got down the shore. I think it depends on where you wear it and what you wear with it that matters. if you spending the evening on the boardwalk its perfect, especially Jersey. It's a statement there!

Baseball cap with the ponytail pulled through the back, a pair of cutoff jeans, and a pair of cowboy boots, hell yeah that's sexy!! Hmmm, forgot a top, that can be optional, Ha!
I grew up as a tomboy in the sticks, I had long hair back then and always had a hat on then I grew up cut my hair and moved to the "big" city... And my comment on your neighbors reaction: I agree with most posters, it depends on the situation. I think a lot of women look good like this.
*Edit!* Went and put my hair up and put on a hat for the first time in my life. I think I look pretty damn hot! =)

Agreed you look hot. Some girls can pull it off and some can't I guess it just depends on your face shape. I can pull off many different hats and I think you could too.
Depends on the circumstances, but camping is totally an acceptable time to wear a baseball cap. It keep the sun off your face. It's not like you suggested she wear her ball cap to a dinner at a fine restaurant.
