What Are Your Gym Pet Peeves?

Contributor: Septimus Septimus
I've become something of a gym-nut lately, and I love to go 4-5 times a week. The gym I belong to is pretty cool, and for the most part there aren't a lot of things that bother me. But I do have 2 little pet peeves.

One is when I see people exercising on the equipment without shoes/shirts. This isn't the sauna people, you need to be dressed here.

Another is when people don't clean up after themselves. Just the other day I saw someone working up a good sweat, dripping all over the bike, and he didn't bother to take the 5 seconds required to wipe it down when he was done. Gross!

What are your gym pet peeves?

The few times I went to a coed gym, I was squiffed out by the dirty old men there. They were obviously there to ogle the younger fit women, and they didn't bother to hide it when one who was not attractive crossed their line of sight (I was young, but not fit).

Not to mention the undercurrent of comparison constantly going on. And the fact that their TV's were always stuck on Fox News.

I prefer the yoga studio.

The not cleaning off the equipment after sweating on it is the worst; I'd rather work out at home!

The judging and competitiveness is what I am uncomfortable with too. At my gym at home, I can't use the elliptical without some guy getting on the one next to me and trying to go faster than the machines can handle, as if he's proving something to me. At school, most of the people in the gym are part of the Greek system. The frat guys don't try to hide who they are checking out. I am some weird other with big boobs, big thighs, and lack of brand name workout gear. That's why I go to the pool instead. Nobody there cares.

Mine is people not cleaning up after themselves or leaving the locker rooms a TOTAL f-ing mess. Oh, and people who just text on the machines. Why come to a gym if you're not even gonna give a half-ass attempt to work out?

I don't mind much else about gyms. I can't expect too much from working out in public but I wish people were cleaner.

People who don't wipe the equipment after them, and people who aren't willing to let you work in while they're resting between sets.

People who leave their stuff on the machines, like sweaters, towels, water bottles. And never come back for a while to get them.

The guys grunting so loud trying to impress people. I was a heavy lifter when I was younger and the grunting is not necessary. It makes me laugh then I just get annoyed.

You said both of mine.

I usually do a one-set, whole body workout and people who are doing 3 or more sets, and who rest for long periods between sets (and won't let other people work in) just ruin it. One good thing about our gym is that there are multiple options for most exercises, so at least there's a workaround.

I don't like the sweat factor. I don't like having to smell others either. I choose to work alone or at home.

You have to wear shoes at my old gym and cleaning up after yourself is also a rule. IF they caught you not cleaning up after yourself you could have your membership revoked.
