Hall of Misspelling Shame : What words do you see misspelled/misused the most?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
I'm known to some for my message under my avatar: "Let's eat Grandma" vs. "Let's eat, Grandma" PUNCTUATION SAVES LIVES!!! Well, in a similar vein...

We've all seen it countless times before, the errors in basic grammar & spelling. Some people overlook
it, while others become annoyed. Personally, I don't find it as bad when they pop up in casual chats. But, when writing a review or Sexis article, I think these types of errors shouldn't be there.

So, which do you see the most frequently? I could add so many more to this poll, but instead, feel free to mention any others that you notice! How do you feel about seeing them?

Here are the choices, listed as the incorrect spelling or wrong word, followed by the correct one, (for whatever sentence in which they are being used).

I would also like to add:

"except" for "accept" (Professional businesses do this the most.)

"would of" for "would've/wou ld have" (This one really drives me batshit.)

I've found that the spell check on Firefox will not correct 'definitely' to anything but 'defiantly.' Needless to say, that's the one I run across most often in reviews!

I use Firefox as well. I always have a issue with that word. I spell it wrong and only get what Firefox gives me and then I have to figure it out on my own.

Oh, good ones! I should have put those right after effect/affect. The "would of" & some of the contraction mistakes show a basic lack of understanding of what one is saying!

Had I spent more time on it, I would've definitely included those!

So that's where so many of those mistakes are coming from! I had no idea, thanks for mentioning it!

Grammar issues drive me bananas since writing is one of my strong suits. All of these errors bug me, but some are definitely more common than others. Three things that I notice people say a lot in my area are "mines" (as in "That is mines" rather than "that is mine"), "seen" (i.e. "I seen this show" instead of "I saw" or "I have seen"), and "says" ("I says" instead of "I said"). I literally cringe.

I don't have any spelling mistakes to add to this list right now - this is a pretty big list, and the errors that I see tend to be pretty varied depending on the person. I just want to share this glorious article with you guys so that next time someone tells you that they have alot of something, you can enjoy yourself as much as I do when it happens to me.

Oh man i'm guilty of many of the common spelling errors, but this is largely due to having a learning disability as well as being dyslexic - i easily misspell and confuse words for other words (like affect and effect, or its and it's) as well as writing/typing words backwards (like need to deen/been, dog to god or vice versa, ect). I'm the last to crack down on those for spelling/misspelling or using improper grammar since i myself am guilty of it and most of the time can't understand or see how i am wrong until walked through it over and over again.
It's actually something i get teased about a lot, because it's very easy for others (especially peers) to look down or belittle me, or make me into a joke, as a way to invalidate a legitimate argument made because of a spelling or gramatical error.

Pretty much all of these. Too/two/to and there/their/they're get to me the most, I think. Those drive me completely insane! Then again, I am one of those people who feel the need to properly punctuate and capitalize text messages.

It's a running joke at work that our boss can't type anything without making at least one glaring error. Either there is a word terribly misspelled or he uses a wrong word. Best typo I can remember from notices at work wasn't from him, though. Someone posted some dates for meetings and had one scheduled for February 3th. Yes, "thirth."

I can't believe I forgot to/too/two!! To for too has to be the biggest mistake I ever see!

I properly punctuate and capitalize text messages, as well!

I hope you don't feel targeted in some way, my intent in starting this was not to make fun of people.

I think it's a totally different situation when someone has a learning disability. That said, I have seen a lot of posts by you and have yet to see any errors, so you do very well! I can imagine how hard that is for you, thinking, actually seeing, something correctly, but not having it show correctly on the page.

Who the hell would think it's funny to mock someone with a disability? I am offended for you! I don't see how what you say is invalidated by how you say it! That's as ignorant as thinking someone can't be saying anything intelligent because they have a drawl or a lisp.

Alas, I do not think the majority of people making these errors have a disability. I would even hazard a guess that you are more careful about what you write than most people. As I said, I never even noticed & we've chatted quite a bit.

Many interesting misspellings of the word "definitely" I've seen over the years:

Definitley
Definately
Defenetly
Defiantly
Definatly
Definantly
Definently
Definetly

And remember kiddies: "We invited the strippers, Hitler, and Stalin." is different than "We invited the strippers, Hitler and Stalin."

Oh no, i dont feel targeted or anything, but it's a point i always like to make when things like this are brought up. I was almost 20 before i realized the difference between "your" and "you're." My dyslexia really gets in the way at times, but luckily computers and phones often have spell check built in to them. I can't begin to count how many red underlined words are in post/typed papers/ect before i go back and do a spell check. One i've done a lot lately is putting "fried" instead of "fired." I have a lot of trouble with putting vowels in the right place.
I still get really nervous when i have to hand write something for school and share it with peers because i know its chuck full of spelling errors. When i went to take my GED pretest, spelling was still included (but not graded) and while i was on schedule for everything (11-12 grade level for everything), spelling i got a 4.3, meaning my spelling was around a fourth grade level. I'm sure it has improved some since that was a number of years ago, still i know my disability is always going to be prominent.
Its kind of funny though, a friend once said to me "I dont understand how you read so much and can comprehend the words, but you cant spell."

Thank you for the compliment!

I was honestly hesitant to post this discussion at first; I was concerned I would be called a snob. However, I was practically driven to it after all the time I've spent on the site, (due to my current insomnia problems)! Seeing all the responses has stopped me from worrying about seeming overly picky.

OOHHH, I want your quote as my status message! I'm totally stealing it for day to day use, just so you know!
