Have you been formally trained in martial arts?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
When we were young "Kung Fu" was big on TV and everyone was studying Karate, Kung Fu or TaeKwonDo after school. There were "dojo's" on every corner. Then it seemed to wane...fast. TaeBo, Krav Megra and some other "exercise" versions of martial arts have popped up, but we wonder how many people today have, or are, being formally trained in unarmed, hand to hand combat (or self defense, woman's defense....whatever you care to call it). We don't mean having taken half an hour course at a community center, we mean "have you actually studied and practiced over many months or years" to achieve a certain level of proficiency"?

If you care to say how far you have gotten, please do, but every "style" has different measures, so it is hard to do a poll about that.

All you have to do is "do it". Why wish? Sign up tonight. There are inexpensive classes at the local community centers, YMCA's, and all over the place, where you can get a taste from instructors doing it for the love of teaching, not the money. If you have an interest, you can always go much further.

Like the Nike ad says...just "do it"!!!

I got up to my green belt (two strips). In my class we did "strips," and three strips got you to the next color. So it was white then green then brown then black. It was at a boys and girls club when I was like 12. I have forgotten all that training now.

No - it was not popular when I was growing up. We did get my son some training as a child. It was a good way for a young boy to get physical activity and mental discipline combined. Mostly a positive experience.

I took a self defense class through my university that was based in kyokushin karate. We actually had a chance to test for belts at the end of the course. I could have earned my blue belt, but alas, the test was too early in the morning for a Saturday so I didn't go.

I took Taekwando for several years as a kid, and then self defense training when I got a little older.

I really regret that I skipped kickboxing lessons at the age of 16. I really liked the training.

I had some lessons. I feel awkward touching strangers, however, so it wasn't very much fun.

I studied Taekwondo for about a year then the dojo shut down and moved

I studied Muay Thai in college for half a semester

other than messing around practicing the moves with some old buddies I never took it further - mostly from lack of dojo's in the area

In Muay Thai I had a bad habit of hitting too hard for the people I was in class with so I always practiced with the instructor. It was like dancing whenever we moved into the full sets of movements

I have not trained in martial arts, but I've got a few friends who have. I will fully admit, the reason I haven't is strictly from a lack of interest in anything resembling exercise ever. I know it's an unhealthy attitude, but it's mine...
