I read this as "peanut butter" in the pan. I couldn't understand why anyone would do that.

Butter always in the pan - it melts and is distributed evenly throughout the bread.

I put a light coating up margarine on the bread, put one slice in the pan then add the cheese and other slice right on top (so it doesn't all fall apart, which it tends to if you assemble and then put it in the pan) just like my mom taught me. ^_^

I also prefer mine on whole grain wheat bread or an English muffin of the same variety (seriously delicious...you guys should try it!).

I usually apply olive oil directly inside the pan.

I put softened butter on the bread but when I've been too lazy to soften it in the microwave, I have just melted it in the pan, the put the bread on top.

Butter on bread then grill it , to make it better I make bean and bacon soup and we dip it in the soup

No butter, coconut oil! I put coconut oil in the pan, bread with cheese, tomatoes and spinach, mushrooms if we have them.

I haven't had this in a long time, but I am guessing I would put it on the bread. I make them for my son that way. I would just use a light butter or something lol.

I always put the butter on the bread. I don't really like super greasy food, so I spread the butter fairly lightly. All I really care about is that the sammich doesn't stick to the pan.
