'Fuck' and 'you' often spring to the lips.

It annoys me. Why should they care what my facial muscles are doing?

I get very annoyed by this. People constantly do it to me at work. Like I'm going to just walk around work all day with a huge grin on my face for no apparent reason.

Depends on my mood, often I just end up smiling.

It's more than annoying, it actually hurts a little bit. My whole life I've been treated like my emotions don't matter. Am I not allowed to have days when I'm down? Am I not allowed to feel sadness, anger, or pain? No, I have to paste a smile on my face because you seem to think telling me to smile will some how be the epiphany I've been hoping for? I have three young children that I need to constantly be strong for. I'm allowed to FEEL when they aren't around me and if I don't feel like smiling than I'm allowed not to.

Sorry for the rant...just really gets me. You never know what someone is going through. Maybe next time instead of telling someone to smile you could take a second to think about what they might be going through and offer an ear instead.

'You' being hypothetical of course!

I just look like I normally do and say "I am smiling."

I used to rarely smile and heard it a lot and it made me so mad. Smile more now and it's not so bad.

I think I'd be confused. If someone wants to see me smile because they like my smile, I guess that would be okay.

I hate it. I don't take orders from other people, even if said order is intended to be cute/positive/whatever .

Annoyed...how dare you expect I be happy, especially since those people don't even know me!

It's annoying, when it's someone who doesn't know you. We don't all walk around with smiles on our faces every second.

i see that one person has voted for "uplifted." take note people...these are not very good odds if you are trying to put someone in a good mood. perhaps choose a different course.

i used to wonder what was wrong with me...like they knew something that i didn't...like i was missing the point, missing the reason that they were smiling. now i feel like they say it just to make themselves feel more comfortable. makes me wonder what's wrong with them, instead of what's wrong with me.

right. if it's a person who does not know you well, what are they thinking to say such a thing?

right. i smile for myself...and not for anyone else.

maybe we could make some cash out of it. like, "okay, i'll smile if you give me ten bucks."

sometimes we have good reason to not be smiling. i'm not one who needs good reason, even. i don't smile for no reason...just sitting on the couch with a crazy smile on my face. that would be frightening.
