How often do you buy a new car? (or do you lease)?

Some people only buy used cars. Others buy new and wait till their cars fall apart, others still lease a new car every three years or less.

What do YOU do?

I usually end up buying a new car every two years or so. The first new car I bought was a lemon, so I got rid of it. Then I bought another new car that I LOVED. After I stopped working we couldn't afford the note anymore, so I traded that one in for another new car. Before that I bought used cars and seemed to damage them up in a few years. lol

When I was 17, bought my first car, out right. It was a 1998 Dodge stratus. *I'm 20 now* Still to this day I love that car, but it wasn't suiting my needs. It seemed like the maintenance for this car was getting costly. So I am leasing a 2012 Scion xD right now. I thought leasing a car was going to be horrible, as much driving as I do, I was worried about my miles. I am a smoker, I was worried about being able to smoke in the car. Well Toyota managed to change my views on that. The let me smoke in the car. And as long as I go in there when my lease is up, and get a new car from them, either lease, or purchase, I don't have to worry about my miles! It's only been a few months so far, and I love it! They do all my maintenance for me, free of charge, but then again, they do that for almost all of their cars. *At least for the first 2 years, or 5 maintenance's. I haven't decided if I am going to lease again, but I still got nearly 3 years to think about that!

Never, I live in the city with the best mass transit, and I rent a Zip car.

We buy a new one for the misses every 5 to 6 years. We get rid of mine, which normally is about 12 years old with 200,000 miles, and I get her old one. Six years or so later we do it all over again.

I buy a new car when:
A) Time in the shop for non-maintenance issues becomes a major inconvenience,
B) It has issues that make it unsafe or unreliable (think dead on the side of the road or brakes fail, not AC went out or power steering is weak) or
C) The costs of repairing the vehicle exceed the cost to purchase/finance a new one

For example I got rid of a car that even though was still under warranty had a design flaw and was about to require its 5th transmission, that car lasted ~55k miles and 4 years. I am currently in the process of searching for a new car, my present car has done about 119k miles in 10 year, in the past few years in has been costing me between 1 and 3 thousand dollars a year in repair and now I am looking at another 3 to 7 thousand dollars in repairs and at its age, I foresee more and more repairs.

I've bought new and I've bought at action and I am buying new this go around. Honestly, it depends on the type of vehicle and its history to determine how I will purchase. I tend to stay away from leasing, but that is because I want to be able to do things, like install heated seats or sound deadening, remove the badges, replaced the wheels, install a better radio, ect.

I purchase a new car, for my wife, when hers reached the end of the warranty. I drive a pickup and keep it until I feel like buying a new one.

Goal is to have my first car last 9 or 10 years, then get a new one. My plan is to run it to the ground, then get a new one and use that for quite a while.

I've never bought a new car. I bought a '95 Dodge Neon when I was sixteen and sold it when I went to college. Then my parents gave me their 2003 Saturn Vue when they bought a new car. I plan on using the Vue until it's completely unreliable.

Never bought a new car before, if I could afford it I might but I think it is better to buy one two or three years old and let the original buyer take the hit for depreciation.

Year does not matter so much for us, it is more the design or type we need at the time. We have always drove them into the ground before getting a new one.

In the old days I had a company car - the only new vehicles I ever 'owned'.

Now they are all used. My formula is to get a low mileage older vehicle and put 100k+ miles on it. My max purchase price so far has been about $16k - the next one may be closer to $20.

Still paying for my daughter's college - so no car purchases until that's done.

I've only owned one car, my '02 Civic which my dad bought me in '05. I would never consider leasing in the future.

I've only bought two cars so far. The first one I paid in cash for. I did not want that car, I wanted another one, but my parents decided to negotiate the deal without me agreeing. I finally just said yes because I needed a car within 2 weeks. It was a piece of junk and the guy acted like it wasn't. It had been in at least one accident and still had issues from it. It also didn't have a drop of oil in it and the battery died a couple of days after I got it home. Last time I trust a friend of my uncle's.

My current car was purchased used through a dealer. I'm still paying it off, though I think it is paid off next August. I may consider purchasing another car at that point. It fully depends on whether or not I have a better job. I don't know if I want a new or used car, I guess it depends on the sales price of the new ones. My car is very reliable, so I may not get a new one.

I keep cars about 9 yrs or until it makes sense to buy a new/used one. I buy new/used based on the value at the time.
