How often do you change computers?

Contributor: namelesschaos namelesschaos
So yesterday I ordered a brand new laptop, as the one I currently have has been giving me headaches and after crashing 6 times in the morning yesterday I finally hand enough and ordered its replacement in the evening.

This made me curious how often do you guys change computers?

It use to be every 2 years - but there isn't much new that I need and they can easily go 4 years without a problem.

Im up for a new one currently. I just have to wait till I have money. I gave my brother my old one when I moved, since he builds computers and scrapped it for parts. He keeps telling me hell build one for me if I give him the money. I just dont have 2000 dollars laying around right now. LOL.

My boyfriends computer makes me want to throw it out the window. Im on it now. It always has fits because its just a faulty model, he doesnt know how to read reviews before he buys things. Ive taken this thing apart dozens of times, replaced things and nothing works so Ive basically given up. I do stuff to keep it running but were saving to get a new one.

Ive been using my ipad for the most part anyways.

With our laptops, my husband seems to get a new one every 2-3 years, I get one every 3-4 years. As for our desktop, my husband gets new pieces (video card, hard drive, DVD drive, memory, motherboard) for it about every 3-4 years or so, but not all at the same time; it is a work in progress all the time.

We have two desktops and a laptop. We pretty much replace them once every 5 years or so.

I replace my laptop every three years or so. I wish they lasted longer, but I use one laptop for everything so it gets pretty beat up by then.

There was a desktop that I had when I was younger, and it lasted about 5 years before it died completely. I got my first laptop when I was about 17 and replaced it when I was about 19 or 20 because my first one was flaking out a lot and didn't have the capacity to run a program I needed for school at the time. This laptop is the second laptop I've ever owned, and is still going pretty strong after being used and abused for about 4 years or so now. However I will be getting a desktop soon because my laptop isn't all that thrilled about being on and functioning for 8+ hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week.

I have an awful tendency to break laptops. So far this MacBook has made it past a year and this might be a new record for me.
My last desktop lasted me around five years or so, with plenty of hardware upgrades. The current one is two years old. Actually, on second thought, it might be three. It's one of those two numbers.

I'm a mac person so my computers are about twice as expensive but last 3 times as long. I've had my MacBook for since december 2007 and it's only now starting to slow down.

I do so much on all my Mac's that they just wear out on me. I replace the desktops about every 3 or 4 years and my laptops start slowing down after about 2 years.

I just recently replaced both my first desktop and my wife's old laptop from college. The desktop was 8 years old, but it was starting to slow down. The laptop was 6 years old, and even though I only had the basic programs on it, it was slowing down as well. I only used the laptop on trips for the internet or DVD's, but it was time to go as well. I'll keep my current computers until they get to the point of being annoyingly slow, hopefully at least 5 years.

It depends on what I'm using them for, but typically not till they break or are just too sluggish. I've got a desktop from 2001 that's still going strong and handles a lot of my video processing (yes, it's a Mac), as well as newer ones that haven't had any problems yet.

I had my last computer for about 10 years. Still works, just cant get updates or programs for it. So I upgraded to a new computer. But I still use the old one for lots of things.

I wait until they don't work anymore to replace them. I currently have a Toshiba that is going into it's fourth year with no problems (probably just jinxed myself by saying that, LOL). And I hope it keeps going a little longer.

I have to say other. My upgrades generally depend on the market and tech that's currently out. The incremental hardware updates aren't usually worth sinking money in to so i try the best i can to future proof my rig with strategic buys. I build my own and have so for many many years.

Yep, same for me! I used to do it every year but now that I bought myself a MacBook Pro, it should last at least a few years. Well technically it will last until there is something new that I want hehe

I had the same desktop for about 5 years and then sold it to a friend to buy a laptop. That was in March '10. I'm on my 2nd laptop now, just couldn't pass up the deal.

I've had my computer for about 2 years now. I will probably replace it when I feel it is falling too far behind to play new games or something, especially since I can't upgrade it anymore.

I pretty much trade in my laptop about every 9 months.
