I feel violated. (And not in the good way.)

We came home from working tonight to find our front door kicked in and a light on we don't think we left on. We haven't found anything missing, and the police have already come and gone. The neighbors described the man they saw knocking on our door this afternoon, didn't sound like anyone we know.

My husband managed to get the door closed again, but of course it won't lock. Since tomorrow is Easter Sunday, we probably won't be able to get it completely fixed before Monday. My husband has to work tomorrow, so our son and I will be home on our own. I'm a bit on edge about that, although the dogs are pretty protective. We could go out somewhere while hubby is at work, but that leaves the house unattended and unlocked.

I don't know. I guess I'm just writing this because I needed to tell someone, and to be in someone's thoughts while I'm freaking out a little.

I'm sorry to hear that. Can you call a friend to come over tomorrow? I know it's Easter but maybe there's someone who could?

Does your door open inwards or outwards? If it opens into the house, do you own a door stopper that fits under the knob and extends to the floor? Not much, but it's something till it's fixed.

I'm so sorry to hear that! How unnerving. Is there anyway to get chain lock put on? Or find a solid way to wedge it shut and use the back door? I'm sorry this happened. Much love to you and yours.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. The initial panic is starting to run out, so while I'm a little freaked out about the next couple of days I'm starting to think about it rationally.

Probably not going to be able to have anyone come over tomorrow, but we definitely can try to secure the door a little bit better. We usually do most of our comings and goings through the side door that's off our kitchen, so we can do something a little more permanent to block off the door until we can get it fixed.

I'm still nervous, but I'll get through it. Thanks for letting me ramble at you. Believe it or not, just babbling about it here is helping.

Oh no! How scary! I'm really sorry this happened. I hate that you're having to go through this and fear ya'll's safety. That's awful.

Good to hear you'll be able to secure the door a little better. A little goes a long way when it comes to stopping people from entering or something I'm sure. So nothing was missing? That is strange. I wonder what the reason was?

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a weapon handy too, just in case.

You are in my thoughts and prayers! Securing the doors a little better will probably put your mind at ease. Hope you're able to relax now.

How horrible! I hope you are doing a little bit better!

The good news is that you weren't home & they didn't find what they were looking for. Most likely they wanted something to sell for drug money such as jewelry, small electronics like video gaming systems & spare cash. It's highly unlikely that anyone will bother to come there again as word is likely out you don't have what they want & the neighborhood is still under police investigation . I hope that helps put your mind at ease.

Your homeowners' insurance might provide reimbursement for the door. For security emergencies like this, there are always companies that are available 24/7 to help secure or fix your door.

The fact this person had to knock to determine if you were home tells me they don't know anything about you or your routine & were just looking for a fast, easy score with know idea if you had anything or not. There's no reason for them to ever come back. Your house is now the least likely place to be targeted, ironically.

It is a very violated feeling and I wish I were there to ease your fear and keep you company. I went through much of the same when my family's home was broken into years back and they were cleaned out! I stayed in that house the weekend alone until my folks returned from vacation with the back door just propped up and closed with a 2x4 beam. I also spent the time cleaning up the house after the police left, there were burnt matches everywhere so the thieves could see in the dark.

If you are concerned for your safety, and there's nothing your worried too much about being stolen I would leave until you felt safe with hubby home. Your well being is what's important here, not replaceable items in the house.

My thoughts are with you during this time of turmoil.

Hubby called off work to stay home with us today so we can get things done. Luckily his company is understanding about emergencies like this. We called Lowes and they're open until 6 today so we can pick up a few things to secure the door and see about ordering a new one.

Wow! I'm so sorry! I completely understand your feelings of violation. Your home is your private space and no one should be there without permission. Of course, unscrupulous people don't care about the emotional damage. I hope as the days pass you'll be able to regain some peace of mind.

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. It's worth checking into, but many businesses offer emergency services. It might cost you more, but the piece of mind might be worth it.

I'm glad to hear you're getting it sorted out! You have every right to feel the way that you do, and I would as well! How strange that nothing is missing!

I think that's the creepiest part of it for me. What if they came for something specific, and we just haven't figured out what it is yet?

Although, I know our neighbors on the one side got home just as this guy was at the door. They saw him there but didn't know he busted in, so that may be part of why he left in a hurry. Also, since we don't really use that door the way we have our furniture situated would make it hard to really get in and out that way. He may have just thought the risk of getting caught wasn't worth the effort after all.

It just makes me nervous, and almost at the time of year when we're about to start wanting to leave windows open a bit in warmer weather. I'm just hoping that like Wicked Wahine said, the intruder decides it's not worth the effort to come back and try it again.

Sorry to hear about the distress you're going through. Hopefully it's like what Wicked Wahine said, and the crook's not going to be back again.

Have you and your husband considered installing a security alarm system to find some peace of mind? The rental townhouse we lived in when we first got married was burglarized once, the crooks ransacked and took everything that's worth money away, including all my real jewelries (they sorted through my jewelry box and took all the real stuff), and all the electronic items. We had to fix the sliding glass door out to the backyard, and had the security alarm company wired the entire place up the next day...it really gave us a peace of mind back then.

I'm so sorry to hear this! I've been broken into a few times and I know the feeling, it's horrible knowing someone was in your house. A couple times money was stolen, and my boyfriend has had prescription medications stolen but thankfully we haven't had anything of personal value taken during these break ins. We think they just didn't want anything that would make them look suspicious as they walked away. Stay safe, and I hope you get that door fixed soon.

I love that about this place too. I don't have a whole lot of local friends I can call on, my friends from back home weren't online, and I just needed to talk to somebody about what happened. It's nice knowing that if we throw a line out here, we get feedback from people that care.

Our day was pretty quiet today, and we were able to enjoy the time together. I just keep reminding myself that everything happens for a reason, and I'm thankful because things could have turned out much worse.
