Our 19 year old Shitzu has lost her functions, is confused and having seizures. I just got off the phone with our vet and they told me it is time. I am so heartbroken!! She was a rescue dog and was so sweet! I feel bad I cannot care for her anymore, but bathing her four to five times per day has gotten to be too much, she doesn't respond to anything and I feel guilty. Any advice or help?

It's about quality of life... if she has none, then the kindest thing you can do is send her on her way in the most peaceful way possible. You have my sympathy and good thoughts.

I'm so sorry.

I've been through this with several old dogs. I know it hurts, but they are better off being helped gently across the Rainbow Bridge where they won't be in pain anymore. Most vets will let you stay with them, or you don't have to if you don't want to or just can't.

It hurts more to see them suffer than to help them by letting them go. The medicine the vet uses works very fast and there is no pain, they literally just go to sleep.

I'm so so sorry.

I always tell my clients that the decision to put your pet to sleep is probably one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. However, it should be viewed as an act of love because there is a huge difference between being alive and living. It takes courage to say that I love my pet so much that I'm willing to let her go so that she doesn't suffer any more. Mourn her loss and cherish your memories, but never feel guilty if it's for the right reasons.

I remember when the Shetland Sheepdog I grew up with had to be put down. It's one of the most painful memories I possess, but at the same time I know it was for the best. She had some serious illnesses, was in a lot of pain, and could barely get to her feet anymore. As much as I miss her, I feel better knowing that we allowed her to go peacefully before she got any worse.

It really is a hard decision to make, and I wish you didn't have to make it. There's sites and support groups available to help with pet loss, if you feel you need it, and of course you have the love and support of all of us here at Eden.

Thank you!! The vet had an emergency and we had to postpone until Monday. It is inevitable, but I feel like I got a reprieve. I am so cried out, but every time I look at her I start crying again. It is sad, but for the best. My vet, who has known her ever since we rescued her, told me that it is definitely the right thing to do-her health problems and quality of life make her unable to enjoy herself. When they shut down, it is time to let go. It still sucks, though!! I don't know what to do for our little dog, she depends on her so much! Thank you for your support and advice. Kindred, thank you-it seems you work with animals and I appreciate the advice from a professional as well as from my friends on here.

I am so very sorry. I would be heartbroken but there comes a time when you have to think about how much your pet is suffering. Also, I am sorry if this sounds crass, but they are able to cremate your pet and put them in an urn or nice box so you can have them with you always even if you have to move. My heart and support is here for you if you need it.

I had to put my cat down 3 years ago. I still cry for her. What helped me is that I had the vet come to our house so she could be in a comfortable environment. And a hard as it was, I held her the whole time. I miss her.

Hugs to you!
