In short, we have heard lots of "I had one too many and got this". I am wondering how many of those stories there are, verses the stone cold sober decision to get one?
If you have a tattoo , were you totally sober when you decided to get it/got it?

I haven't ever been intoxicated in any way when I get tattoos. That's just silly to me.

...you're joking, right? No legitimate tattoo artist would put ink on someone if they were drunk.

I have one small, privately placed tattoo. I was sober when I made the decision to get it and sober when I actually went through with it--scared of needles!!! But after I got done passing out in the restaurant my hubby took me to afterwards--I did not stay that way!!!!

I have many tattoos and have always been sober in deciding on them and while getting them.

I have one tattoo and I was completely sober. I went to the shop many times before I was sure what I wanted and where.

I know a lot (but not all) tattoo parlors won't tattoo you if you're not at least appearing sober.

Yeah, reputable tattoo artists won't tattoo you if you've been drinking. Aside from making big decisions while drunk being stupid, it actively makes their job more difficult because it thins your blood :/ All the studios I've ever been to have required you to set an appointment as well. If you wander off the street into any shop and demand a tattoo without even looking at a portfolio first that's your own bad decision (general you here) but if the person is a) ready to do it immediately and b) willing to do it after you've been drinking, that shop is shady as hell.

My rule is that when I come up with a design, I wait 6 months and see if I still really want it. If it doesn't pass that test then it doesn't go on my body.

I agree with all of this. And never ever let your artist free-hand unless you've seen what they've done previously. The results could be disastrous.

I was sober for both of mine.

I got mine because I was dating the tattoo artist/shop owner. He kept pestering me to get one...I was sober but did not want to be...he insisted you had to be sober. To this day I wish I hadn't gotten it but I rarely see it because it's on my back.

Yup, you have to be sober to get one from a legitimate artist. Your blood will be too thin and you will continue to bleed out if you are drunk.

Sober for all 11 of them!

Sad, but true. I have heard that story from VERY close friends. Most were done "out of town" in places like Vegas.

I have 2 tattoos they were both long thought out processes. The first one was at age 18, maybe not the best idea in the world, but i have no regrets and was 100% sober at the time. The second one I schedule 4 weeks in advance, and had been thinking about it for at least 2 months.

Sober for all of mine. I always think out my tattoos so there's a lot of planning prior to actually getting anything. I love tattoos! If I had the money I'd have a lot more.

Sober, but young...so that's sort of intoxicated.
09/11/2013
I have 21 tattoos and was sober for all of them
