I've heard of that, I'm thinking of looking into it.
About the extent of what I know about them is that you sort of cut tampon sized strips of natural sponge, tie a durable cord to them somehow, and stuff them in a clean applicator.
It's a bit...odd...but it does sound much more environmentally friendly.
