Motivation for the Gym??

Contributor: MamaDivine MamaDivine
When are you most likely to hit the gym? By this, I mean what usually motivates you to go? Is there something particularly that irks you, makes you feel bad, maybe you just want to get out of the house? At what point do you say to yourself "I am going to go to the gym". For me, its when I feel bloated and lazy. If I get to that point, I think to myself "If I don't get out of this house right now, I'm going to die of bordem and lose my mind!"

I know my depression triggers and cycles, so that helps too. If I get that far into it, I will think "Ok, its time to get movin!".

Does anyone here have a gym membership? Is it worth it? Do you go alone or with a work out buddy?

I don't go to a gym but I usually feel more motivated to work out in general if I'm in a good mood, have something gorgeous hanging in the closet that I need to lose a few pounds to wear comfortably, or when I'm bored.
My workout buddy when I walk is our dog, but he makes me pick him up halfway through our first lap around the block and carry him the rest of the way so I get a little unexpected weight lifting in too. x'3

I know I have to go so I just do. For me I was just sick of being out of shape and over weight. Something just clicked for me one day and I was just filled with motivation. Lost 50 LBS running and a little workout. Ran the 2011 Pittsburgh Marathon and finished. Was going to run this years but was side-lined with 3 kidney stone surgeries. I am almost done with that crap and will get back to working out. I have a gym membership and love it. My so and I joined together and try to go together as much as possible but I usually go alone which is hard to keep motivated. You just feel so much better about everything when you work out and start looking and feeling good but its a long process!

I don't have a gym membership I usually just work out at home! Something that motivates me is that I make a collage of pictures and inspirational quotes that keeps me going and not wanting to give up. Like a picture of that perfect body that I want, etc. I think if you have trouble getting motivated try making a collage see if that will work

I work out at home, hike, bike or play golf. I've had gym memberships in the past and they can be fun of you meet workout partners that help you stay motivated. If motivation is the issue - as it is for many of us, I usually plan some future event that I want to be ready for. A hike up a famous mountain or a 100 km bike ride - that gives me something to focus on. I have a real hard time working out 'just to workout' - I need a target.

I work out at the gym in my homeowner's association. I have set times when I work out each week and I force myself to go at those times. I rarely think "Oh boy! Time for the gym!" I try to focus on what a good mood I'll be in when it's over. I'm always calm and happy afterward.

I don't go to the gym, I exercise at home and do daily works with my pooch (I remember you guys have doggies too). My motivation is exercise keeps my neck and back pains away, and I hate seeing my gut sticking out and my upper arms looking flabby.

I need motivation too! I think finding a work out partner is a good route to start to have someone there to motivate you

I like to go to the gym when I have some free time and a good audiobook to listen to.

Oops, I mean 'daily walks with my pooch'!

By the way, brushing my pooch's teeth for twenty minutes per day gives me additional upper arm exercise!

I think I am going to try the collage idea, It's something I've heard recommended at other sites as well.

I motivate myself by telling myself that after I workout I can go swimming. I love to swim.

My goal is to be active and healthy. My parents both died way too young because of unhealthy lifestyle choices, including being sedentary, and I'm determined to be active (and hopefully healthy) my whole life.

I work out more at home and outdoors than I do at the gym. I don't have any weights at home, so strength training is mainly what motivates me to go to the gym.

Real key is to go on a regular schedule and push yourself to keep that schedule. It becomes a routine and it's a lot easier to stay motivated to keep that schedule

I am in a happier mood when in a gym, particularly during the winter months. I think this is because I also suffer from light sensitivity issues during the winter as well. The less sunshine, the less happy I tend to be.
