Have you had Septoplasty?

Have you ever had septoplasty for a deviated septum?

If so, what did they do to you? I have no cuts on the outside of my nose and had a splint.

When did your bleeding stop?

No, I've never had any surgeries for my nose/sinuses.

I am next month. I've been denying it for over 5 years, but I can't even turn my head when I sleep. I end up drowning.

Nope, though I need it...I can barely breath through my nose (always feels stuffed up even when it's not because of my deviated septum and narrow nasal passages). So yes, I'm one of those "mouth breathers".

Not sure about the bleeding. Doing a search comes up with a few different answers (from doctors)...some say a week to ten days of intermittent bleeding is common... though if it's heavy and continuous, see a doc.

I had this done when I was 14. My doctor said that if we waited until I were 18, the cartilage in my nose would be too hard and the surgery couldn't be done. I believe this isn't the thinking anymore, but my surgery was done back in the dark ages.

I don't remember any bleeding. I woke up from surgery with tampon-like things in my nose which were removed later that day, I think. At the time my surgery was done, the doctor said they liked people to be awake during the procedure so there would be less bleeding, but I was too nervous and they preferred for patients as nervous as I was to be out.

I remember that the person I shared a room with had had it done a few years earlier. She said she had black eyes afterward. I mentioned this to my doctor and he said "You don't have black eyes because I did a better job than her doctor."

Septoplasty is done using a lot of spoon shaped instruments, all introduced into the nose. You shouldn't have any external cuts at all, in most cases. The amount of bleeding depends both on the clotting ability of the patient and the actual amount of tissue "cut" on the inside to access the nasal septum sub-structure. Huge difference from patient to patient. Also, because of differences in where the problem is, in the nose, to how severe it is, recovery can be very different from one person to the next. Some have black eyes and cheek swelling and discoloration. Other people have almost nothing after sinus surgery.

This is one of those few surgeries that if I needed it, I'd do it without hesitation.

My sister needs the surgery. She sounds like a leaking faucet all the time. It's terrible. I wish she would have it done already. I've never had that problem but I did have my nose busted once and had to have that broken and reset which wasn't too bad. Although any surgery sucks.
