What do you call a road you can drive faster than 55 mph on?

I live in Chicago. The ones you don't pay to drive on are Highways. The ones you pay are Tollways. As in Philly, NO ONE here says "Freeway."

Freeways are for those hippies in California.

Highway or interstate. Freeway is not in my vocabulary and neither is escalator.

I don't think I've ever called anything a highway or freeway. I just say "Road" or "Street". Oops?

Same here, which makes sense because we're only a couple hours apart. But more than anything we just say '80' or '287' - just go by the numbers, not the titles.
Yeah, for me it's the highway, but more often just the 401

In NYC I don't know that we use any of those terms. I mean, we have the (belt) PARKWAY, or the (hudson river) DRIVE, or the (nys) THRUWAY, or (interstate) 287, but... Well, Highway came into my head way before freeway, so that's what I picked.

Interstate. I've lived both in North Dakota and now in Texas, and both places we say interstate! Because that's what it's called... Unless it's a highway, which are, well, not interstates.

For example, I-35, I-29... The I stands for interstate... Other roads are highways, but in many cases the speed limit is 55 for those.

"Highway" or simply "road" here. Maybe we are too backwoods to go with all those high fallootin' names you all got in the big cities.

I'm pretty sure I've never said the word freeway before.

I usually say interstate, but will sometimes say highway. Mostly though I will just say the number of the one I'm talking about like I-70

My interpretation of a freeway is when it passes through busy cities and are multi-laned. I call them highways when they pass through wide open rural areas. But then, we usually refer to them by their numbers only.

Here in Ohio, it's a highway or just the number (70, 71, etc.). I don't think I've heard anyone even use the term freeway outside of my grandparents' generation.

I used to always call them highways (even if they were interstates) until I started driving and paying more attention to maps. Now I pay closer attention to maps and call them the appropriate name (highway/interstate + #).

I'd call it an Interstate if I had to pick anything, but honestly I just call it a road.
