What Have You Done to Get a Promotion?

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
I recently found out that a professor of mine who was awfully friendly to me ( and now I wwhy) sleeps with students and gives them recommendations for internships. One of these girls, I ended up knowing and then x-friending. It disgusted me and really made me dissapointed in her. Could she seriously not do it with brains alone? I don't think she deserved to take an internship spot from someone who worked out of honesty instead of bribery.

What have you done to further your career or education ect?

I've worked my ass off to get ahead in any academics or job situations over the years because I couldn't respect myself if I did it any other way. I don't understand how people get any sense of pride and accomplishment from their positions when all they can say about it is something like, "I'm as useless as a turtle in tar, but I'm an easy lay."

When I worked in HR, hiring people for a security company, there were a couple of people who tried flirting heavily with me to get a job. It didn't work. In all actuality, they would've had the job if they wouldn't have tried so hard.

I totally agree. That is how I feel about it. They deserve it the way they "earned" it. Where is the self respect?

HAHA I would have done the same thing. I know someone who tries so hard to be people's friends and be liked that she gets made fun of a lot and doesn't even know it. I hate when people try too hard to do things and look desperate. Desperation...not attractive.

I remember when I enrolled in a new high school as a junior, and my classmates telling me I had to brown nose the teacher to get any roles in the school productions. It pissed me off. I annoyed the hell out of the teacher (who didn't even have a degree in drama) by not bothering to kiss her ass. I called her out on it quite often.

She made sure I didn't get to work on any shows that year. Which was okay, as I ended up being the drama reviewer for the school newspaper my senior year due to my qualifications from my previous school (performing arts high school). For some reason she was put out when I spent half of my article focusing on her casting her own daughter in a lead part.

It's obvious I'm not made for politics. And I never end up in jobs that have promotions, anyway.

That is hella hilarious and totally awesome! Definitely not ass-kissing, oily political prowess but really, I look down on that stuff as well. That kinda stuff is just digusting and unethical. Which makes your courage to do what you did even more great.

This is seriously so awesome!

I work my ass off to get things in life, grades, raises, whatever. I think the vast majority of people in a more powerful position can see if you're trying or not and a great many will reward you for it.

I had a similar experience, only it kind of went the other way. My manager awhile back was speeding me through promotions and different "career-bettering" seminars. He had a GF and I had a BF, so I didn't think much of it. He was nice to my BF and everything, but he was very huggy and flirty (we were both from NY, so it seemed normal). The flirting finally became a bit too heavy and weirded me out, and my growing aversion to him ticked him off after "all he'd done for me". So I quit and later on found out he was fu**ing 3 other employees at different stores (he was the manager over a few different Fazoli's chains) and ended up knocking one of them up. How bad must you have it to need to screw your boss to get a 35 cent raise at your fast food chain?

Oh my! I sure hope he got his in the end. Like fired, then sucked dry for child support. That kinda thing. I hate those kinda people.

I've worked in a few bad places where it wasn't sex but it was still discriminating. I trained one girl for 5 months and she got my promotion because of my race. Another I was fired after my boss found out I was pregnant. That's why I decided to work for myself. No kissing up to be had. I do bust my ass to produce the best products for my clients though. Photography isn't easy by a long shot and there's always someone else wanting your work. There's simply no room for foolishness.

I've never done anything to get myself further along and I don't think I ever will.

I'm not disgusted by people who do it though. Sometimes it IS nice to not have to work your ass off for something. I don't see it much differently than someone inheriting a company or job position because of a family tie. The closer you are to the people running the show, the better your chance of moving up. It's just what happens from time to time. :/.

Actually I've never been placed in a situation where my last resort would even be that. But I like to think that I'm a funny person who others enjoy being around. I'm pretty young and haven't held a job long enough to get promoted, but I'd think that my likeableness, eagerness and hard work would pay off.

I've worked very hard for everything I've gotten in my life.
It seems so surreal that people actually sleep with professors for the "grade" or internship. :/ scary and gross.

My hubby went to highschool with a girl like that! When I ended up taking a class with her she asked about my hubby. She acted like they were BFFs, I came home and asked my hubby if he knew her and he was like, huh? He just started laughing and said "She thinks everyone likes her." I think it's hillarious b/c I later found out she had the hots for my hubby. We live in a small town and occasionally see her out and about, she does hit on him but he obviously shows no interest. I just think it makes her look completely retarded.

I have an old boss that used to sleep with lots of girls on the job..He was married and had kids, and was a lot older than most of them. I thought it was disgusting. I was friends with a lot of people at work and we all went out together all the time, he started flirting with me all the time, and I always ignored it. One of the girls was leaving a higher up position to move on to better things, and I was next in line. The day after I told him to quit bugging me at the bar he told me I wouldn't get the promotion. I pulled a dick move and went to HIS boss and told him what happened. I showed him texts, and pictures of us all out at the bars together (which was a company no-no for him to be hanging out with employees outside of work) He got suspended and had to be retrained and they sent him to a different store, and I got my promotion I worked super hard for that spot, and I wasn't going to let it get away from me!

Jesus, At my last job I worked my ass OFF! I really did work SO HARD. I'm not going to say that I was super nice to everyone, but what I did do was be honest and open and tell the truth about who was doing everything on the up and up and who wasn't. People who were too shy to speak up about things like that really appreciated it.

Those who weren't doing things on the up and up didn't care too much for me, but hey, no loss.

So, I work hard, some people think I'm kinda funny. I'm outgoing and I'm straight to the point. I really am a nice person and will do anything in the world to help someone else and when people see that, they tend to want to help upgrade those people.

Sometimes I miss my old job!!!

I haven't ever done anything other than work hard for a promotion, but I haven't had that many jobs either. I've still got my very first job, I just work in a different department now. My next job I would have ended up as a manager had the company not gone out of business, job after that was pretty nice but ended up going out of business, and the job after that I never wanted to advance anywhere in the company, I was just there to pass the time and earn some money until I could find something that paid better.

Promotion? Ever since I left military service, the "title" didn't matter... More money, that's something else entirely. Backed up by my performance, I have asked for more, and got it.
