We have, in Charleston, a place called PUGANS PORCH, which is AMAZING. Love the place...ambiance to food. ALL amazing. Named for a little dog the owners found living on the porch, abandoned there by the prior owners of the historic house. He is buried now, at the front door!!!! If you are in Charleston, SC, eat there. You will NOT regret it.

Any superb dining places where YOU live?

That's so cute that they named the place after the dog, and it sounds great So sad though!

Agh. I really don't want to disclose where I live, but I'd love to talk about this amazing place!!

A couple hours from me there's this small diner right off the highway.. It's not the nicest looking place, but inside is the best food ever and the nicest people. I have a few friends that live that way and I'll drive forever just to eat there and see my friends. I especially love this place's breakfast foods. God. It's amazing

What a cool story! That's what I love about Charleston, so many interesting stories and history! I will have to tell my mom about that restaraunt. She goes to Charleston all the time. We're only a few hours away! Trenton, GA to be exact. Not many interesting food places here... at all! Lol

That's a sweet story, Bignuf.

Over in Cocoa, FL, on US1 is a small Cuban Cafe in a strip mall, so it's literally a 'hidden gem'. The owners are Cuban and make their native dishes to order. It takes a bit of time, but it's well worth it - their braised meats are melt-in-the-mouth wonderful. They even bake their own Cuban bread daily ... the stuff has a horrible reputation, mainly because it's allowed to get stale more often than naught. Fresh Cuban bread with baked ham and grilled pork slices, warmed pickles, and melted Swiss cheese (the Floridian Cuban Sandwich) takes on a whole new light when done fresh.

I also know of places in Hamilton, MT, and Kansas City, MO, that are well-worth the title of Best Non-Chain Food Places. Both require making lists, though.

The Vortex Bar and Grill is, hands down, the best place to get a burger. No bones about it. Technically it could be considered a chain, there are two of them. Little 5 beats Midtown by a mile.

Theres this little hole-in-the-wall place called Sushi Hama (NOT Hana) that has about 20 chairs in it. It has the BEST sushi and the BEST prices I've ever seen (Sans in Little Osaka in San Fransisco)
