What's a misconceived notion about your state or region?

Contributor: Mwar Mwar
I'll admit, I have a few (slight) prejudices when some states are mentioned to me. I'm working through that, so help set me (and some others) on track! What are some stereotypes or misconceptions people have about your state or region? What should we know about your region?

Florida is not paradise ... we have awful humidity, lots of bugs, our roaches are huge, the pay sucks, health benefits are nonexistent at most all companies, you have to pay to get on the tiny stretches of public beach, our cities and towns are consistently 30 or below on the Walkable City scale, and we're always at the top of the "News of the Weird"-type sites at least twice a day because people here really are that bugfuck crazy. I still have no idea why anyone wants to move here.

"Oh, how are you liking the US?"

"Your English is superb!"

"Can I see your passport?"

"See any aliens recently? *snicker*"

I remember one time I was like 6 and I got SO PISSED at this lady at a Subway rest stop for complementing my English. I got a map out to show her that NM IS in the US and is actually has some LARGE CITIES and very important research locations, thank you very much!

Yup, I was just about to say this too.
It's stays overcast a bit on the western side of the state, but we don't get much in the way of actual rain.
And the eastern side of the state is pretty sunny.

I live on the Eastern Side right now and it NEVER rains. It's either snowing, windy, or sunny.

So agreed on the Florida-is-not-paradis e thing. It's a nice place to vacation in, because on vacation you tend to ignore details like that. As an actual place to live in? Go find somewhere else where you can a)get a decent education; b) find a job; and c) isn't full of tourists who can't drive.
