What was your greatest most irrational childhood fear?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
I want to go with irrational fear, but if you only had rational ones, then go ahead & mention that one, as long as it's the thing you were most fearful of.

I'm still thinking about mine, but I think it was quicksand!

Never being considered 'normal'. Now I embrace my quirks. But I've also realized I'm not all that weird either.

Geese. I fucking hated geese and I had recurring nightmares about them. The regular ones like being scared of the dark and monsters and stuff too but I think geese are irrational. I also had a dream once that was like an evil Toy Story where my toys came alive and fucked shit up so I was scared that would happen too.

I'm still afraid of being outside in the dark alone(I fear crazy psychos hiding in the shadows, watch too much Criminal Minds and the like). But I used to be afraid of Chucky....the evil creepy looking doll, and Freddy Kruger, lol! I was also afraid of getting sucked into the TV thanks to Poltergeist. Of course those last three are no longer fears.

Boogeyman. We lived in an oddly designed two story house and I was the only one who slept upstairs, and my room led to a large storage room with a padlocked door, and at the other end of that room was an outside door, I was always afraid there's a boogeyman hiding in that dark room; to make things worse, whenever my mom goes into that room, she never bothered to lock the door on her way out!

Oh my, that room sounds like pure nightmare fuel.

I was horribly afraid of my basement. There was really no reason because it was finished, had windows, and looked similar to the rest of the house. But I still ran up and down those stairs whenever I needed something from down there.

I feel stupid asmitting I'm still creeped out by basements. I HATE having to go down to ours at night to reset the router sometimes or print something. I feel so uneasy and still jet up the steps like I'm five years old again! But I have a terrible fear of tornadoes though rare here, we get watches and warnings, so I wanted a basement but they're still creepy! I was in one while on vacation when I was 15 and I've been terrified ever since.

Story about the Boogeyman: When my grandpa was a kid he heard the garbage truck outside and got scared and thought it was the Boogeyman. He went to his parents crying and they said "Oh, it's ok, they only come on thursdays." trying to explain that it was the garbagemen..... So he was petrified of Thursdays because he thought it was the day the Boogeyman came LOL.

I am really bad at telling other peoples stories but yeah that is one of my favorites

I was terrified to go onto the top most floor of my house by myself. My play room was up there and I had friends over quite often. However, if I was by myself, I was too terrified to climb those stairs.

I've never lived in a house with a basement, but I did lived in a house with a very dark downstairs garage for two years. The house belonged to my aunt and uncle, they partitioned the back of the garage into a bedroom with windows, and another tiny room next to the garage door with no natural light source; my aunt practiced her Chinese musical instrument called a Guzheng in there occasionally. A few years after I moved out of their house, my young cousin choked on a piece of hot dog and passed away, so my aunt and uncle sought assistance from a Psychic Medium to contact their son. Besides helping them to communicate with their son, the Psychic told them there's actually a spirit staying in that tiny room all along. My aunt and uncle believed her and moved away as soon as possible. Boy, when I heard about the news, I had goosebumps all over me!

Um, spiders? Which still freak me out. Most irrational childhood fear was of Sharp Tooth from The Land Before Time. I used to have a recurring nightmare about being chased by Sharp Tooth through a Target store.

King Kong, I must have been about five and that film scared the hell out of me. I don't remember if I actually had nightmares about it, but I still remember my older cousin taunting me about being afraid of King Kong. Not that many years ago I saw that old film on TV and now by today's standards it seemed like a cheesy kids film.

I laughed at that. It reminded me of when I was about five and at the state fair. They had like a "freak show" and my cousin and I begged to go in, he was a few months younger. One act was the ape woman. She went into a steel cage and turned. I don't remember how it worked out but strobe lights were involved. It scared us to death and we took off running. Our parents had to chase us clear down the midway because we were getting the hell out of there! A couple years ago while waiting for a concert, my fiance and I paid $5 to go into that tent. The acts were SO fake and stupid. The ape woman....I can't believe we were scared of that, it wasn't even a decent ape costume and the special effects were so crappy. It's funny how things scare you as a kid.

My friend was scared of him, even into high school, lol! I had a stuffed E.T. doll that my uncle got me when the movie came out. He worked at Blockbuster at the time and they were selling them. I hid behind the couch and propped him on the arm and made him touch her and she woke up and jumped up. She was so mad at me, but that was hilarious. I still tease her about it.

I was afraid of moths after going to Butterfly World. They swarmed me!

I am okay with them for the most part now. I do dislike it when people who own birds have so many moths and then the moths contaminate everything.

I have always and still am utterly afraid of ladders and electricity. I cannot plug anything into a new electrical socket unless someone has plugged something in first while I watch. I buy electronics, but again, have to watch as someone plugs it into the wall first before I can use it.

Ladders.... My dad used to clean the chimney and all my sisters would climb up on the roof using the ladder. Me? I climbed up the side of the house and back down that way... I dance up trees, and jump out of planes. I pretend of am going to jump off bridges and cliffs.... But get me near a ladder, cherry picker, scaffolding.... I get all panicy.

Ohhh... One more for the road.... I used to be afraid of using the toilet. I watched poltergeist when I was very young while sitting on the stair case while my dad was watching it. For the longest time.... I was afraid dead people would come up from the toilet and hurt me.

Hey... You said irrational. Never thought for a moment I was rational!!!
