In the 1970's and 80's, when we took flying lessons, it looked like "civil aviation" was just beginning to enter a new age of incredible popularity. Then, a combination of dropping commercial air prices, and the high cost of "recreational flying" in a bad economy seemed to "drop the bottom out" of that sport and activity.

How many here would still love to learn to fly, assuming you could afford it (and it was far more affordable then it currently is)?

I don't like to fly commercially, I'm definitely not getting in a non-commercial aircraft.

I took a few flying lessons, but I wasn't able to pass the medical exam required to get a pilot's license because I take anxiety medication. I would have loved to complete the lessons and get a license though

I would love to learn how to fly. I go in planes all the time to jump out of them it would only make sense to learn how to fly a plane as well.

I fly fixed wing but have many helicopter (rotary wing) flying friends and family. Helicopters are way, way harder to fly.

You know, honestly, the cure for many people who totally fear commercial flying is to have them experience the actual control of flight. In short, have them become private pilots. Once they understand all the dynamics (and enjoy the beauty and fun) of being in the cockpit, the fear usually is quickly evaporated.

Some introductory courses really are pretty inexpensive. However, plane rental is indeed expensive. Even aviation fuel is super pricy. It is just not a "cheap" hobby. Even ultra-lights and powered sail planes or hang gliders can run a pretty penny.

That is does, but most people opt for fixed wing lessons. Helicopters are just not something one see's in civilian general aviation much.
