Would You Use A Sarcasm Punctuation Mark?

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
I read this interesting article about a company inventing a punctuation mark to indicate sarcasm. It is a funny idea, but is it needed? What are your thoughts? Would you use it?

I don't think it is necessary, but I voted that I would use it. I have gotten into arguments before because people didn't understand I was being sarcastic. It might help eliminate some of that.

I would use it, but I wouldn't buy it. I wonder if they have that copyrighted. lol

Sarcasm is useless if it's not recognized as such.

If people can't tell you're being sarcastic? You're doing it wrong.

I would use it in some situations. But at the same time I could see it taking away from the sarcasm by saying "hey I'm just kidding!" I think the beauty of sarcasm is that it's subtle, and this really isn't subtle.

Er, I mean if they can't tell without a special punctuation indicator.

Agreed - if your delivery is that poor in timing and wording, no sarcasm for you! Also, if the people you're typing to are that thick, no 'sarcasm for dummies' for them!

Some people just don't pick up on it no matter how obvious it is. Like those super literal people. UGH.

I was raised in a bilingual home (English/Sarcasm). I don't think it would be easy to remember to separate them.

I would definitely use it - I've gotten in too much trouble with people misinterpreting emails and txt messages. It's so hard to make a joke in writing!

I worry that it would be too much like explaining a joke, or an e-quivalent of 'shooting the guns'. If you have to explain...

Exactly! Like others have said--sarcasm is an art. If you can't make it apparent that you are being sarcastic or if it becomes obvious that your audience is just reading way deep into it, then just don't use sarcasm in that situation. Sarcasm isn't necessary for effective communication; it's just fun to use on occasion.

I don't need a punctuation mark to come across as sarcastic. Thank you, goodbye.

I agree with Carrie. And when I'm being sarcastic, which is quite often, you know it.

Agreed, most people can tell, but I HAVE had those moments where I'm like.. "Wait, what? Why are you pissed? I was being sarcastic!"

There are already ways to convey sarcasm through writing, they just require a little finesse.

My thoughts on this are if it's not clear that you're making a sarcastic remark then it's probably not an appropriate time to make one.

Using a punctuation mark to indicate sarcasm seems like it just defeats the whole purpose of saying something sarcastic.

I would use because I think sometimes when writing people think I come of as being mean or not funny, so I always try to include "lol" to let people know it's "funny"

Like an {eye roll} ? Yeah, I'd probably use it.....sparingly. Not to be mean.

But, like Gunsmoke and Mr. Sauce, I too, live in a bi-lingual household.... English/Sarcasm. (I LOVE that by the way, Mr. Sauce. It sums up the essence not only of how I was raised, but of how My Man and I conduct our lives.)

One of the first things my kids learn, when they speak is "Yeah, right...."

Actually, people getting upset at sarcasm is often justified. Sarcasm is, by definition, witty language used to convey insult or scorn. It's not meant to be nice or nicely funny.

I would use it when having discussions with certain people who tend to take everything the wrong way, and be sure to note that it's for idiots who can't take a joke...or figure one out

half the humor of sarcasm is identifying it as sarcasm.
have you heard of the interrobang ? It's a combination between a question mark and an exclamation point!
