Sex offender teacher.

School recently started up here where I live. Down towards Seattle they are having HUGE problems in one school. Last year a teacher (I believe Middle School) was convicted of inappropriately touching at least 3 girls. He admitted to it, I believe there was a little jail time, and he went to counseling, and did community service. Therefore the judge ordered him back to work (since he completed his sentence) and he was under contract still. This has outraged parents and people were pulling their kids out of his classes left and right, picketing outside the school.

Personally, if a teacher at my son or daughters school were touching kids inappropriately, I don't think they should be around kids, period. School is supposed to be a safe place where you should feel comfortable leaving your child in the hands of other well trusted adults.

What does everyone else think of this?

There was a teacher at my junior high who was accused of such, and the school fired him. I don't know if charges were ever made or anything like that, and this was over 20 years ago, but still! In the case above he shouldn't have been reinstated. What happened to zero tolerance and all that?

Sexual predators are not to be allowed anywhere near parks or schools so are you getting the facts straight? This is nationwide policy to protect kids everywhere from pedophiles. This just doesn't seem right at all.

Heh down where I live in Missouri the judge wouldn't have let the guy near a school for his own protection...good ol' boys don't like nasty men touchin' their lil girls.

Yea this sounds like a case of hearing info through the grapevine that has no roots in the truth.

It sounds like something is missing. Legally everywhere in the US (I think everywhere) sex offenders aren't even allowed like 1000 feet near a school or park. If that is true, something illegal is happening, big time.

I think this falls under Megan's Law, saying sex offenders aren't allowed anywhere near where children reside or play, and they are put on a list so everyone knows they're scum.

Yeah, as I understood it, what twistedheartsx said is true. I know for a fact they are at least not allowed to LIVE near a school in my area. Not sure the distance, but I had also heard they weren't even supposed to be x distance close to a school either. No way would they get away with working at one.

That sounds really odd. When horrible things like that happen here, not only are the teachers fired, but they're usually not allowed to teach again.

I can't believe they sent him back to be around kids! WTF is wrong with the justice system in his area and the school board?

Sex offenders should not be allowed to work around kids. A music teacher of mine was arrested for being a sex offender. Learning about it definitely put a different spin on his class, especially since kids sat on his lap.

I must chime in here. I know some people who are sex offenders, so I have a really good understanding of both sides.

Now, if they have actually harmed a child that is one thing. HOWEVER, to say that all people who are registered are scum, low lives, or whatever, is just ignorant. Megan's Law is a federal law that is actually not as harsh as most people think. Each state has its own version of it, some more loosely written than others.

I know some guys who have been to prison and rehab under this law and are free to do what they want and work where they want because of that. Please note they were arrested for child pornography (they had all registered with one site that had underage girls modeling...not 6 year olds, but 16 and 17 year olds that looked older than I do at 27), not actually hurting kids. I don't feel they need to be punished more than they have been.

Offenders are allowed near parks and kids once their sentence has been served. It is part of how our justice system works.

I just had to stand up for those who deserve it. There are offenders who have kids, should they never get to see them again?

I think we should think in terms of how severe the crime was and what it was exactly. THIS GUY shouldn't be teaching. At least not in that state, this is a pretty serious offense, so he should have been barred from teaching...if only to make the students feel safer. But not all offenders are like this, and some states do lump them all together, unfortunately.

If I took the stance that all of them were horrible humans I would also believe anyone who had ever gotten into a car after drinking should never be allowed to drive OR drink again. Or that anyone who had ever killed anyone (no matter how they did it, even by accident) should never be allowed near people again.

Again, I do agree that this guy has no reason to teach, but I really don't agree with lumping them all together.
