Should women be able to walk around topless in the USA?

Contributor: yrnw yrnw
Beaches, maybe. But even though I don't necessarily consider breasts "obscene," I still hardly think it's appropriate for women to walk around topless most of the time. Maybe in places where it's okay for men to be topless, but it's certainly not appropriate just walking down the street.

Men would be way too distracted by all the boobs. It would cause car wrecks and god knows what else!

Because a grown woman's breasts (unless nursing) are sexual. You don't see men walking around with their thing's hangin' out.. we don't walk around with our butt's hanging out. Besides, there's a lot to be said for leaving some things to the imagination.

I do wish that there were less censorship of breasts in the United States. I believe many European countries have a healthier outlook on the topic and that we would do well to follow their example.

I feel that trying to change the standards that drastically would not work here in America. However there are clothing optional areas that you could go to. I would not be comfortable topless in public, I already get too many stares since I have DD's. I feel that if others want to then that should be their deal in appropriate places.

I think we should legalize it but only it we stop oversexualizing them. It's why so many people freak out over breastfeeding.

I think that there should be some areas where it's allowed, but I think men and women should be required to keep their shirt on at most places.

I hate that we can't go topless. Its really silly, I think. But its because people think of breasts as entirely sexual objects. And that's also silly.

Yes, if they really want to they should be able to.

If guys can do it, so should women.

No way, there are places where that would be just fine. Would you really want to be standing in line at the check out counter. With someone standing right behind you and their boobies right there. There nipple about to hit you in the shoulder? If you turn around you might get poked in the eye? I do not think men should be able to do it either, no one wants to see your man boobs either. Really it is ridiculous that men can and we can not, however I think none of us should. It is indecent exposure. I certainly would not want my sons seeing a bunch of topless women walking around. They should not be seeing topless men walk around either though.

I think this is a great idea! It's legal in other countries and should me a moral choice not a law.

Even though men get to go topless outside, they still have to wear shirts to get into most stores and the like.

I'd love to be able to take my shirt off when it gets really hot (big boobs and sweat are NOT best friends), so if women could go topless in their own backyard or at the beach, that's fine with me.

I agree. While I do not want to see random people on the street without their clothes on, I feel that requiring women to cover up just because our society has sexualized breasts ( and in our country, sex often equals shame) is ridiculous and oppressive. Men walk around all the time without shirts and nobody says anything, but if a woman was spotted topless, someone would call the police. Breasts are more than just "sex objects". They are meant to feed our babies. There is nothing shameful in that.

Im going to stay no. The reason being is men (myself being one) arent all able to control themselves. The easier it is to get to your body the harder a guy is going to try to "Accidently" brush up against you. I personally see the female form as art and I love seeing a naked body but not all people see a naked body as any more than a sex toy. Encouraging problems is not the way to go.

i won't say that breasts are to be kept covered. they're not meant to. it's simply our society, in particular our american society.

honestly in spain and italy, topless beaches, and spontaneously topless beaches are much more common and much less lewd-sexual by nature. when i was in italy i saw a couple local gals topless hanging out on the rock beach by my home, so i started doing it too. it was sooo freeing! i loved it! i wrote a lil poem about it....

'sunbathing topless is where it's at.'

it's nice to play like the boys
amidst disney princess beach towel
armpit hair
tits out
sunscreen
the end.

female children run amok without tops or bikini tops even. folks dont sexualize female children or the female breast like they do in america.

i remember seeing multiple ads with women with breasts exposed... one was for a freaking photocopy machine! i also saw commercials for breast feeding where (god forbid) the entire NIPPLE was showing. i mean, imagine.

the thing is, men oversexualize us. and it's a vicious cycle.

the more folks cover up the female breast and turn it into something 'dirty,' and 'sexual,' the more folks will desire it. it's human nature really.

if i told you you weren't allowed to purchase EF toys for a month... wouldnt you just want to buy them even more? odd example but you get the point.

i would highly enjoy it if i were given the rights of everyone else. thing is, not only would i at least be sexually harrassed if i walked around topless here on hot days like my male counterparts, but folks would defend the sexual predator, and not me. i would have deserved it because i was acting irrationally, being too sexual.

my breasts are only more sexual than a man's because our society deems them so.

in many african tribes, women do not wear tops.

so yes, women SHOULD be able to. but our society simply does not allow a safe environment for it.

another sad reason that the denial of the perseverance of discrimination and persecution of women in this country, in this day and age, is just that. DENIAL.

Women can legally be topless where I live. Brushing up against them "accidentally" could lead to an assault charge.

This post makes me very happy.
In America, at least, there are some fundamental troubles with our society in regards to nudity. As far as I'm concerned, I don't give a crap about nudity, as long as it's not explicitly sexual. There's nothing wrong with it, especially breasts. Americans are positively terrified of tits and it's weird, icky and wrong, I think. For the sake of consistency, yes, women should be able to go topless. Unfortunately there is a lot of other crap that prevents that from being entirely feasible, for the time being =(

I think maybe not around the normal street, but certain areas. I also believe that they should put more nudity on TV, loosen the censoring.

The big argument is children, it's the parent's responsiblity to watch what their kids are doing and how they spend there time. I have kids and keep an eye on them, not relying on other people to keep their minds/bodies safe.

It should be allowed in appropriate places. It would be great to have beaches where it is legal here, I hate tanlines. Parents should be able to decide then whether or not they want their kids around it.

Same here. I would like to but I'm too big of a chicken. I think it should be legal everywhere. It's just another body part like the elbow or hands. Breasts have just been sexualized like crazy. If It's warm outside and I want to take off my shirt to feel more comfortable then I should be allowed to!

I'm another one of those people that wishes everyone would wear more clothes... No offense to anyone, but I just don't want to see all of your everything hanging out. Beaches? Pools? Okay, cool. But not in Walmart or walking down the street. And I personally wouldn't do it 'cause it's too cold 90% of the year and the few days it is warm enough I'd be terrified of getting sun-burnt.

men do it why shouldn't women be able to walk around topless. It could possibly cut back on the sexualization of women. It also depends on where the individual is(location) and who's around them.

All the public nudity today at the World Naked Bike Ride reminded me how amusing it is that some people have a problem with women being topless in public.
