Ah yes I grew up in the country, just outside of a small town named Campbellford. It was miserably conformist and full of small minded idiots. I left to change schools in my last few years of highschool. Ended up in a school in Toronto with a student body that was incredibly diverse, in culture, race, and socio economic backgrounds. I LOVED that school. I loved living in the city.
I remember being in the 4th grade and there were two African American twin sisters in my class. Shortly after my first year there, the family moved away. They had been constantly harassed by a number of the people in town, and their daughters had been called a number of racist names no 10 year old should know exist. When I graduaed and went into highschool it was not much better. I had traded a miserable, mean public school for a highschool filled with the students from 5 public schools all from small towns and villages surrounding my own, with people who behaved the same. It is not easy growing up being taught that being a good person, and being yourself is what is important, when everybody around you is learning that conforming and being accepted is he top priority. When I finally moved away, it felt so nice to be in a school where white people were actually the minority. I saw it as an opportunity to be different in a place where everybody was different. I have moved all over the place since then, and have always found living in a diverse community to be of great importance to me. I would like to raise my children somewhere that differences are accepted and embraced and not seen as flaws.
Having said that. I would like to share the newest horrific example of the kind of crap that goes on in my hometown.
