Thoughts on Planned Parenthood?

Contributor: Curves Curves
I personally think it's a really great resource for many different types of people. I'm actually planning on volunteering there.

What do you guys think of it?

I think it is a wonderful organization that helps a great deal of people in many ways, and don't understand why in the world anyone would want to harm it in any way, as part of the government has been trying to do lately.

If it weren't for Planned Parenthood, all of my friends in high school probably would have been pregnant, and those who now have kids wouldn't have had the resources to take care of them. We had abstinence-only education, so Planned Parenthood was the place folks went to get their information, their birth control, and their condoms. It was a safe haven for my friends, and I would do anything to keep them open.

I also want to volunteer there at some point.

I think it's a great organization. Unfortunately, I just found out that the my local branch closed as of yesterday. I'm currently trying to get an interview with another branch to shoot my final project for my video class.

This is a video that I made at my university this past semester, protesting the proposed de-funding of Planned Parenthood. It sums up my views and those of many other college-aged Americans!

If I'm not mistaken they also provide everyday health resources and cancer screenings. All of these things are super important.

I think given the population at EF, we're almost all going to think it's a great resource. Had it not been for Planned Parenthood, there'd be a lot more pregnancies, STDs and, as previously mentioned, unhealthy people in general who can't afford health care elsewhere. It saddens me when people focus on one or two things Planned Parenthood does that they don't agree with while ignoring all the other ways the organization helps the community.

I definitely think it's great. I haven't been there for myself personally, but almost everyone I know has and I don't know what they would have done without it!

I currently intern there. I actually work there to be honest, since I'm getting paid for it. I really do like it here, but there are some trying times. You meet people from all walks of life, and it isn't always pretty. We see people with genital herpes all over their face, pregnant 10 year olds, or mentally unstable people who are expecting children.

There are days when people walk in and you just want to cry because of what they are going through. I try my best to lighten up the mood with music, free helpful pamphlets, and I plan activities for the support groups. I actually host most of the ones for teen pregnancy, STD prevention, and the emotional support groups.

The worst thing about working here is the constant protesting. I've been hit in the face with tomatoes, red paint, rocks, etc. on my way out of work. There were days when we had to lock the doors and call the police so that people could safely enter and exit the building.

Yes, we do actually provide cancer screenings for testicular, cervical, and breast cancer. At least that is what my location is doing. I know different locations offer different things.

Wonderful organization! I hate that the idea that it may some day be limited. (I had heard somewhere that congress was wanting to pass a bill about greatly decreasing the numbers of Planned Parenthood).

I think it is a great program and they are starting to shut them down in my area due to lack of funding. In my opinion, this will lead to bigger problems than finding new funding options.

Same here, this is just going to cause a bunch of teenage pregnancies. This is not going to be a good thing at all.

So, what happens when Planned Parenthood is completely shut down? More people will get STDs, end up with late-stage cancer, pregnant, etc. This could lead to more people on welfare, which the government has to pay for (even though America has a huge deficit). What is the point of that? Why not put some of that time and effort into improving schools, healthcare, paying off our national debt, etc?

It's awful to see the sheer amount of people trying to defund Planned Parenthood and shut them down completely. PP offers a great deal of services that not only deal with abortion. They make birth control more widely available for those who may not be able to get their hands on it otherwise which essentially helps to prevent abortions.

I also don't believe it is in our place to expect everyone to abide by our own set of morals. That's my biggest issue with conservatives.

One thing people don't know about PP is that they also preform the aftercare involved with miscarriages. My mother had quite a few due to Ovarian cysts and other issues, and because she had very little money that didn't have to go to feeding and schooling my sister and I her doctor sent her to PP for a D&C(or maybe its DNC my mom is hard to understand sometimes)

She had to drive(idle more like) through the protestors, with them shouting at her and throwing things, all while dealing with having lost a child. She finally stopped, got out, and read them the riot act up and down. "You don't know who it is you are shouting at and giving dirty looks! You don't even know if they are pregnant or not! I LOST a baby and you are going to sneer and shout at me?!" They shut up real quick.

But I digress. Planned parenthood isnt advocating teen pregnancy, or promiscuous sex. People seem to think that because they exist that the atitude is all "Hey, go ahead and have unprotected sex all the time, just come here and well fix it if you end up with unwanted concequences." Thats not it at all and i cant think of a single person who would have an abortion lightly. Regardless of how you feel about the pregnancy, abortion is a HARD thing to choose.....Im ranting again. Ill stop now.

I went on the pill when I was fifteen. In Illinois, the age of consent is 17, and my doctor wouldn't give people under age 17 birth control pills. So, I went there. I've been going to PP since then
