We've been doing it for weeks, from the twenties thru today we've talked about style and music and fashion and the things that influenced us in each era. How about the present? From Y2K madness to today, what screams new millennium to you?

Y2K itself. Fear. Stocking up on food. Computer threats. Hype.

Oh gosh the Y2K, everybody waited...and nothing happened. lol I remember sitting in the living room, watching the ball drop, with flashlights and a fire going in the fireplace just in case all the lights went out.

Heh. Technically, Y2K was during the last century, so it actually kinda was a different era.

You know - anything internet just feels normal to me at this point; I've been involved with it for so long.

What -really- stands out for me this past decade or so is all the freakin' rap on the radio.

I'm from New York so 9/11 is the biggest thing for me. Today they shut down the West Side Highway because of a huge fire on a pier. I saw a huge plume of black smoke filling the sky and felt this horrible paralyzing panic until I heard someone mention it was a sanitation garage that caught on fire. For a minute it looked the way financial district did at 9am on 9/11 and it was absolutely horrifying.

Oh, SLL, I am so sorry you had to briefly relive that. I sat in my house, alone with a baby, watching the news and crying and hoping My Man would get home. I can't imagine the panic New Yorkers go through when something happens to reignite the fear.

It's got to be 9/11 for me too. I use to work there (92nd flr, tower 2), but God spared me that day & kept me home for a parent/teacher mtg I had re-scheduled to that morning (original appt was the day before). I would normally have been at work by 8am. Lost my entire dept & several friends/co-workers. My world changed drastically from that day & I will never be the same. It has been a new world for me since then.

Y2k hype was so over done - the same purveyors of fear are no telling us the world will end in Dec 2012 - the end of the Aztec calendar. Hopefully the 2012 hype will just be a History Channel phenom that no one watches.

Terrible pop music.
When I think of 2000-2010, the first thing that comes to mind is Backstreet Boys & Britney Spears.

Then it's Beanie Babies....what glorious memories.

She: 9/11 is still used as weight behind a political agenda, which I find kind of awful, so I guess that's really one of the most memorable things. Don't get me wrong, I think 9/11 was absolutely a tragedy, I just think it's a bit disrespectful the way some politicians are using it as motivation still for things that aren't necessarily related.

I think it's all a bit scary. 3 days ago my area was hit with 3 tornadoes all in one day! It's a disaster and our entire town has no power still. We're running off a generator. Being that our area has never ever seen any kind of harsh weather, much less a disaster like this, it has really made us all more aware that the end times are here. I mean the shit is scary. Excuse my language, but we've all gone through hell this week and we're not even fully recovered yet. There are people's houses in our streets right now and bodies stacked up. The funeral home was destroyed as well. It's seriously time that we wake up. The Y2k wasn't what people thought and now they're doing the whole 2012 thing which I don't really get hyped up about, but reading Revelations in the bible, everything predicted has happened or is on the verge of happening and it scares me now. I've been having this major scare since the tornadoes hit the other day and the entire town is. Our eyes are open for it to be over soon. I hate to sound like such a freak, but really it sure is happening exactly how it says in the bible. I know it's "just a tornado" but like I said, I live on a Mtn. and our area hasn't ever had a tornado and we've never been in a disaster like this.
