I have called lawyers and never received a call back. Here's the sitch:
My beloved, God bless his soul, got married in his early 20's. Divorced a couple of years later. His ex moved to a different state. We've spoken with her and she said the divorce was finalized and she used the decree to have her name changed back to her maiden name.
We've been to and or called every county in the vicinity and there is NO, I repeat NO decree on record. Period. I've had supervisors look for it, I've done background checks on them both. NOTHING. BUT, the marriage record IS on file.
We want to get married. But every county requires the date of divorce to be listed and we don't know what the date was because no one bothered to keep the decree after the fact. It's something you have to request separately for an additional fee.
What the hell do we do? The divorce took place almost 25 years ago. There's no way we could find the lawyer even if she could pull it out of her ass. (ANd yes we realize he's a fool for not holding onto the golden ticket.)
