I won't even actively consider proposing for a year. It sounds incredibly cynical, but I've been burned too many times to fall for that again.

I don't know if there is a too long.. each relationship is different.

All relationships vary- my parents knew each other for three months before getting married and I know other couples who have been together for ten years without popping the question.

Depends a lot on the relationship and where you are in life. I'm doing around a year and a half, which seems about average for most people without extenuating circumstances (being in college, etc)

A year is not at all cynical! I mean, you're still in that "honeymoon" stage of the relationship. I know that's how it was for my partner and I. It takes a while to get to know their true side. There shouldn't be any pressure to propose at a year.

I think 3 years is good, but it does vary by couple. I think it's a good idea to live together first though. Sounds stupid, but that's when you really see who they are! For instance, I found out how terribly unorganized my partner is when we moved in together. It hasn't changed after almost 2 years of living together, and it will never change. I've chosen to accept it, but it would have sucked to marry him, then find that out, and be unable to handle it.

I feel like it should be at least a year. But I've been with with my boyfriend for 5 and it still doesn't make sense for us right now. I expect that to change once he gets his Master's and we live in the same state again.

I feel like waiting too long is definitely better than not waiting at all! I guess if you're together 20 years before asking, it might seem a little funny to do it, but it's still better than asking after say, only a year together, in my opinion.

Depends on the relationship and where you are in life. Under a year seems awfully soon in most cases, especially if you're young. One of my friends got married at 20 after dating for a year and being engaged a couple months, and I had to hold my tongue on that one.

I get the thrill of "why wait?" (I had that with my ex, who turned out to be pretty bad for me). But better to wait than get divorced...

EUCK pop the question? It seems like engagements and weddings are becoming a tradition of the past
