I'm interested to learn people's opinions on when a relationship becomes long term. Is there a specific time?
At what point does a relationship become "long term."

When it becomes exclusive and you have made it a long term to permanent relationship. The longer I am married, the longer the actual time period becomes. However if you are a serial dater, a month would be long term for you or if you are a selective dater a year might be considered long term.

Gotta agree here, it depends on your dating habits and the relationship itself.

Personally I don't think it's time based but rather when both people in the relationship are committed to being with each other long term. If I were to guess at time based, even though everyone is different, for me after 6 months I would start to consider long term.
To some, 6months is a long time, but in my opinion a long term relationship is when things tend to be getting more serious. After 6 months there is still so much to learn about a person even if you are with them every day.

I think its more of a state of mind rather than a time frame. I think long term is seeing a possible future with the other person, commited and whatnot

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year, and I felt it was a long-term relationship around 6 months.

I am going with 2-3 years. Before my SO, long-term was more than 6 months. He changed everything for me.

Wow! These answers are different than what I was expecting.

I agree with those that have said it is the commitment level, more so than the time. Once you're exclusive, are making plans, merging your lives, etc... it's long-term.

It just depends on the person and the couple. I have NEVER dated someone when it wasn't exclusive. That is not my thing. I do not like feeling cheated on. If I'm going to date someone, they're only going to date me and I'm only going to date them. So exclusivity doesn't decide for me if a relationship is long-term or not because they're ALL exclusive. I'd say that it's when it feels like you're not going to leave each other and you have every reason to stay. My boyfriend and I, who are going on one year and five months soon, were long-term well before a year went by.

it depends on the relationship, but i'd say after a year it's a definite

It depends on what type of relationship it is... if you are still going out with other people then it is harder to tell. But generally speaking I would say 2-3 years, though one year is definetly a milestone.

Cute answer and I agree, my situation is the same as yours, besides the fact that we where going on 3 years this march, but a couple of months into our relationship I new he was the one I wanted to be with

it depends per person, if you normally have 2 year relationships then maybe 4 or 5 if u normally have 6 month relationships, maybe a few years, it also depends on how serious you are getting

I think a relationship becomes longterm when the participants realize that they are willing to work hard to stay together. This can take days, weeks, months or years.

Not until we realize that there isn't anyone else out there we would rather be with at the moment.

I believe that if both parties plan on it being long term it is at least in their minds long term.

I think it absolutely is not measured by time. I think it's more based on commitment.

Each relationship evolves at it's own rate, I don't think there is any one right answer.
