Need Help with Reviews Please: What to Include and What not to Include?

Contributor: Nickisonehere Nickisonehere
I have a couple of worries/questions concerning my recent experiences of posting reviews and receiving feedback/votes. I'm fairly new here (actually, I think I've had an account for a while, but I just started using it like a week ago), so hopefully some of you more advanced users can help me out. Basically my issue is this. Given the following things I'm going to say, it makes me think that my reviews are just simply missing something. I would like to get better, so I would greatly appreciate any help.

The first issue I'm having is the following. I posted a review of the Captivity Cuffs the other day (link). I looked at the voting results just now and I have 2 'somewhat useful' and one 'extremely useful'. This seemed low to me given that I had read the other two reviews, and one was getting better votes than mine EVEN THOUGH they fail to mention an essential feature.

I had read the other two reviews of the item the other day and saw that neither mentioned an important feature of the item (that there's keyless release), and one of them even stated in his/her review that the only way to remove the cuffs was to use the key! I posted a comment on each of their reviews asking why they hadn't mentioned the feature, and asking if maybe mine were broken or something (even though in the item description on the product page, it says that there's keyless release). Neither responded.

My question is this: how is that one of their reviews is equally rated as mine, and one is higher? I must be doing something wrong. Maybe I shouldn't mention the keyless release feature, since it's in the item description? Please help me out!

Here's my second issue. Another review of mine (link) has a 'not useful at all' as a vote. Is the review that bad? Or is someone intentionally giving me a bad vote out of spite? I'm inclined to think the latter, but if I'm wrong, can someone please explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

Here's my third, and last, issue. The third review I've done (link) has gotten a decent number of votes (compared to my others). Most of them are 'useful' though. I read the highest rated review for the item. It's very good, and by all means deserves the rating it got. I'm having difficulty seeing what exactly makes it better than mine though. Maybe I'm just too long-winded?

Any advice or constructive criticism is highly welcome, and if anyone has a similar request than please let me know and I'll try to help you out!

Nick

Sometimes, unaware people vote on what they feel is the usefulness of the product rather than the review, it seems. That might explain your first issue.

I have no idea what to tell you about the second one. There's absolutely no reason it should have been voted less than useful.

The third issue...

I'd say the top rated review of the Bo (by Beautiful Dreamer) is exceptionally readable. Yours are informative and have a very different format than most reviews on site but the format may be reducing readability for some.

You have to also remember that those who have been with EF for awhile - or who blog many of their reviews - simply have a larger audience and are likely to get more votes as well as consistently good votes. They often include pictures or video and people have come to expect good reviews from them, have come to trust them and tend to vote higher.

I dunno. That's just my guess. Personally, I think all your reviews are good. It makes no sense that any of them would be voted as less than useful.

Thanks a bunch, your comments are all reassuring. I didn't realize people blogged their reviews, that's interesting. I think you're probably right that the way I've written them isn't particularly readable. I suppose I don't like the disorganization of most reviews, they seem to just go from thought to thought without much rhyme or reason. Even Beautiful Dreamer's review of the Bo struck me as such, although I agree it's a good review (certainly better than mine). Maybe there's a good median between the overly structured style I'm using and the free flowing style of most reviews. I'll have to think about it more.

Thanks again for your helpful suggestions, I appreciate them immensely

Maybe some one wanted to be a jerk i guess when they voted negative on your review. I agree with Carrie Ann though, your reviews are pretty good. I wonder...can people who have not registered on the site vote on the toy reviews?

Anyone who reads a review, registered or not, can vote.

Why not? Shouldn't consumers be able to rate whether or not a review helped them in their choices?

I agree as well - I don't see any problems with your reviews.

Anyone can vote or leave a comment, whether they are registered or not.
