A question for mentors

Contributor: Owl Identified Owl Identified
So, I love the idea of the mentor program and I think it's an awesome resource. I've watched a lot of really great newbies hone their writing and reviewing skills through the program and I think it's awesome. However, I never considered becoming a mentor for whatever reason. Lately I've been wondering if maybe I'd enjoy it.

My question for mentors is sort of a two-parter: what made you want to be a mentor and why do you continue to act as one? As in, what do you love about it, what makes it worth doing for you? I'm trying to see if it would be a good fit for me.

Thanks for your feedback in advance!

I just got my approval to be one. I don't have any students yet. I did it because I love to help. I really do. And I see it sort of a pay it forward. I had 3 mentors here that showed me the ropes (mind you the last 2 did not have to push for much of anything) and I thought it was so nice that as a newb that option was there for me. So I wanted to be able to help someone the same way

I wanted to become a mentor because I love to see excellent, detailed reviews on products, and I figured that others like to as well.

I only have one student (who is kind of a long-term student), but I'm going to continue to be a mentor to encourage proper participation (instead of fake reviews, etc) in the community. I know it incredibly helps to have someone hold your hand and help you through becoming a productive member of the EF community as a newbie. I only wish I had had someone help me when I was starting out.

I will say that being a mentor can be a time-consuming, sometimes downright frustrating, thing to do, but I think it's worth it.

I enjoy being a mentor because I remember what it was like when I first came here. I couldn't figure out how to get around the site, do the first couple reviews, etc. I also wasn't sure of what needed to be in reviews content wise vs. what the reviewers look for.

I enjoy helping people, and I have made great friendships with quite a few people through the mentor program. Whether I was a student or mentor!

The only con out of 6 or 7 students, only two of them have done reviews/kept in contact/etc. It is just getting the good ones that makes it all worth it

I think you would be an excellent mentor!

I just jumped into the mentoring today as well, and I echo most of the sentiments already expressed. I enjoy helping people and would love to contribute more to the community.

(I can't believe you're not a mentor already. I could have sworn you were!)
