I don't think my mentor gets on much...

Contributor: lilgrump lilgrump
Its been a few weeks since I submitted my review and still nothing. This happened with the first review I submitted to them also. I mostly just submit to editor now because of this, but I'd like to officially graduate from my class. I'm not sure what to do.

Have you messaged your mentor to see what's going on? Maybe there's something going on in real life causing your mentor to not be able to log in as much.

If you do that and still get no reply, I believe you can cancel the class. Your review will get tied up though. You can get another mentor and they can unlock it. Plus then you get to work with someone on your reviews. If you're not getting much out of the class maybe someone else would be able to teach you something.

I'd message first though. I'd hate to see your mentor lose a student.

You can drop the class if you like. You will need to join a class with another mentor in order to get whatever reviews your current mentor has of yours published, though -- otherwise, you'll just end up losing those reviews.

I wrote them. They told me once to submit to them and not the editor, but I was only doing that because it took so long for them to publish. Also, the one they did publish, I got no feedback from them. IDK, this is my first class and I just really don't see the point in the mentor program.

Before cancelling the class, send JR a message. He's the liaison for the Mentor Program, and he's who to contact in this situation. He'll take care of it and will get you either a response from your mentor, or the all clear to drop the class.

All mentors are different - some are VERY hands on and helpful and others aren't. Also, all mentors are people - sometimes going through a tough time in their real lives.

Send JR a message and then go from there. He's helped me in a similar situation.

Well you should be getting feedback. If you're not, then there's no point to the program. In this case I'm gonna agree with indiglo. You need to contact JR and explain what's going on.

"Also, the one they did publish, I got no feedback from them."

Then they're not mentoring. Even if it's brief, a mentor should ALWAYS provide feedback on your reviews. They should also be helping with questions you have about the site. I would let JR know about this, then cancel class and find a new mentor.

This isn't how the program is supposed to be. Please be patient and try again with a new mentor.

I've been hearing this from a few friends that i've brought to the site and advised to use the mentor program.... they cant ever seem to get a hold of their mentors either, will go weeks without hearing anything and i know their mentors are online, can see them posting their own reviews and commenting. now my mentor and i didnt see eye to eye but i will say that she was prompt and replied within 24 hours when ever i had a question.

I'm sorry this is happening to you, i hope you get it resolved

I'm sad to hear this. It's unfortunate that there are people being mentors that don't want to respond to students. It's also sad that some don't give a lot of feedback to help the student improve their reviews. What's the point of the program if that's what's happening?

That's really sad. I'm a mentor, and I'm usually very prompt in replying -- usually within a day, but I always tell students to give me up to 48 hours to reply. There have, of course, been times when life has gotten in the way of replying, and during those times, I've always notified my students.

So far my mentor has been great. I just submitted 2 reviews today, but she was working really hard with me to get an assignment to even have something to review. I ended up just giving up until I could get my monthly one.

well of course life totally gets in the way, but at least you let your students know, they've been literally left hanging without a clue as to what they should be doing, sadly my rank isn't high enough for me to formally act as a mentor yet, but i have ended up sitting down with them and showing them the ropes so they don't just give up completely

I love EF and the review program. I actually had applied for this person's class and in the time it took them to accept me as a student, I had already gotten voted in on my own. I went ahead and proceeded with the program anyway thinking it would help. Thanks for the advice, guys. I wrote my mentor asking when they plan to publish my reviews, hope to hear from them soon. What are the guidelines for being graduated? I have one that I submitted to them that was published and sent them two more that are still awaiting approval.

And trust me, I do NOT plan on giving up. I feel pretty confident in my reviews - but a little bit of constructive criticism is okay with me!

You have to complete at least 2 reviews in your class before you can graduate.

Did you write to JR too? He'll be able to give you exact, detailed instructions on how to proceed. He can fix anything!

The Mentor Program is great, so I wouldn't recommend just brushing off the entire program because you got one wonky Mentor. I'd recommend contacting JR because he's amazing. Maybe getting a new mentor that will actually be active and take you and your hard work seriously is another option, but I'd contact JR about it first.

I agree with everyone else here, I didn't go through the mentoring program myself you can tell by my first reviews on here but I had been doing reviews on my blog for a year or so. I have read others reviews an learned from that, since my rank isn't up there yet I can't become a mentor either I would love to though I help my friends with their reviews they send me parts of them an ask what it sounds like and if they missed anything. Just keep at it

Sorry that you had such a stinky experience. I agree that it's a shame folks are participating as mentors and ignoring the guidelines. I hope it works out for you! I am sure any mentors who posted here, including myself, would be happy to take you on for a class, of available!

Thanks everybody. I wasn't sure how to contact JR, but my mentor just graduated me so I'm at least done with that.

To contact Jr email him. Questions about the mentor program, review program, and assignment things should all go to Jr. He is the man when it comes to things.

I've sometimes had better luck sending JR a PM here on Eden rather than emailing him. Here's a link to his profile, if you ever need to get a hold of him on here again. link

I'm glad everything is settled!

You're all making me

All in all, email is usually the slightly faster of the two ways of getting a hold of me, but not by much. Skype works too.

I'm glad it worked out!
