Should going through the mentor program as a student be a requirement for becoming a mentor?

Contributor: Ms. N Ms. N
There are three prerequisites listed for becoming a mentor:
1) Review program activation
2) Contributor with a rank of 6 or more
3) Advanced reviewer status

In your opinion, should one also be required to go through the mentor program as a student prior to becoming a mentor, or is meeting these prerequisites enough?

Meeting the prerequisites should be enough without going through the mentoring program personally.

I did do a search, but I didn't see the topic. Must have been how I worded it.

I was tempted to say no but maybe? That way, you know what is expected of you.

I say yes, if you've had a mentor in the past you can better understand what it means to be a good mentor. If you've had more than one mentor it's even better because everyone has their own style. This way you learn from the students point of view what you preferred and what drove you crazy (like waiting for review feedback for maybe a week) then when you're mentor you can build upon that knowledge.

There are plenty of threads wondering if everyone should go through the mentor program, but not very many asking if mentors should go through the program first before taking on mentoring.

Hmm, this is a tough one. It think that it's a good IDEA but shouldn't be a MUST. The fact that you have to be over a 6.0 means that the users has already learned their way around the site and written a lot of reviews, and there is a FAQ about how to be a mentor, so I think that it's up to the user.

It could definitely be an asset, but I don't know about required. I think everyone should go through the Mentor program...but that's me.

I agree here. There are plenty of those who in their everyday life do jobs that are involve mentoring others, so they are capable of not having to use the Mentor program.

Good discussion, I have been thinking about this a bit lately. I would love to become a mentor and feel I could definitely be good at it. But I have never gone through the program as a student. I started writing reviews and requested the upgrade. I feel I have quickly advanced and gained a lot of knowledge, perspective, better typing/writing skills and spelling also.

I'm just not sure if I should really go through the program now, or not.

I'm in the mentor program as a student now, and I must say it's been very helpful so far. I think it would be a good thing to add it as a requirement, but not necessary.

I think it should be required. Though I know a lot of people have tons of writing skills, I think it's great to be able to have dialogs about the reviews that we are writing. In fact, I've asked other folks to take a look at my reviews before publishing and it's really helped make for some fantastic reviews.

Meeting the requirements and writing good reviews is probably enough

So you are correct. Sorry OP, thanks for the original post. I don't really think someone should have to go through the mentor program to become a mentor though. I think it's nice to have the program, but it shouldn't be required by any means.

I think it's a good idea, but there should be a way to have exceptions and people who are already mentors shouldn't have to.

I don't think it should be required especially for those that already have the minimum requirements down. If you're at 6.0 you should know how the community works, what is expected, etc. I like going through the mentor program because I think each individual mentor has something great to share that we could learn from.

Yes and no.

I feel that prerequisites should be added to becoming a mentor.

At the moment they are;
1) Review program activation
2) Contributor with a rank of 6 or more
3) Advanced reviewer status

I feel that it should also be based on amount of time one has been a member of EF.

A member can get a ranking of 6/10 in a short period of time, should they be a mentor? And yes, there are rare members who have amazing reviews and they've only been members for a short time, but for the most of us (myself included) I don't think I would have made a good mentor at only being a member for a couple of months.
