#EdenTasks - Editor Rotation - April 2013

Contributor: Sammi Sammi
Hi all,

The EdenTasks rotation will be occurring shortly. If you’re currently an editor, you received an email earlier in the week letting you know that your rotation is ending, and you’ll receive a decline email once you are rotated out. Thank you for your work this last rotation!

If you’ve submitted an application and editing test for this round and are declined, you can reapply after the rotation has been completed. If you submitted an application without the editing test, you'll receive a decline email; you may reapply after the rotation has been completed.

Once the rotation occurs, new editors will receive notification that they’ve been accepted into the program, and also an email from me with helpful information. Please make sure to check your email!

For all new editors - I primarily use email to communicate with you, so if you don't have a current or correct email address on file, please let me know as soon as possible. Please make sure to check your email regularly.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post on this thread, check the FAQ, or contact me at sammi@edenfantasys.com .

Thanks!

The editor rotation for April is now complete.

To the previous editors, thank you for all your hard work during the last rotation!

To the new editors, welcome! I've sent you an email with links to information that you will find helpful, as well as other information on the EdenTasks program. Please read the email carefully, and please don't hesitate to email me at sammi@edenfantasys. com if you have any questions.

Anyone who wants to apply for the next round can submit an application now that the rotation is complete. Please make sure that your email is up to date, and check your email/spam folder - you'll receive a confirmation of your submission and the editing test for the next round from me at the email address you have on file within a week of submitting your application. Also, please remember that applications will remain on file until the next rotation (you won't be accepted or declined until then). It's best not to wait until right before the next rotation to apply.

Thanks!

I loved being an editor this round! I'm gonna apply and maybe I can get it towards the end of the summer, next rotation. Good luck, new editors!

I just got declined....again...so how many editors were chosen? Does Eden not think telling us why we weren't chosen would help those of us who got declined for next time?

I'll join in the hand holding and praying with Js250 and Woman! I'll be reapplying too.

There were 21 editors selected this round, and there's a lot of interest for a limited number of spots .

Many factors are taken into consideration to select editors, including performance on the editing test, writing ability, community involvement, relevant writing/editing experience, and the application request itself. If you weren't chosen for this round, it's due to these factors, and you're encouraged to reapply for future rounds.

Yup, reapplying too. I think the upcoming rotation should have had at least about 3-4 experienced editors like Kindred... or maybe start having all reviews be edited so there could be a few more editors in the rotation :/

I thought all reviews were edited except he ones of the long time reviewers. Is that not right?

Okay I have checks on all those things, but whatever. Thanks for the extra info, Sammi.

Reviews are edited until the reviewer reaches a rank of 5.5, then the reviewer has the option of publishing them directly. (At least, that was the case last I checked. It could have changed since then.) Hope that helps!

Last I checked there was no option to submit a review to an editor once reaching a 5.5 rank; you are right that publishing directly is an option.

I'm momentarily being a sourpuss because I keep seeing reviews from reviewers 5.5 & above that have several grammatical/spelling errors that could be corrected if an editor read through the review before publishing.

@Zombirella: I don't think you will be told per se, but I believe that it's okay to ask Sammi if it was because of errors on the editing test/other reasons.

In regards to the thread's topic, I am happy for the new editors ~

I know, Lady, it bugs me to see those unedited reviews and their typos as well.

Here's a thing I've been thinking about: since the author of a review can go back in and make changes after it's been edited and published, how do we really know if the finished work, on which we're rating the editing, really reflects the actual work of the editor?

For example, I recently read a review that was edited by someone I knew to be a good writer, but the last few paragraphs were full of errors. Had I rated it based on what I saw, I'd have had to give her a "Poor." However, I messaged her about it, and my suspicions were correct: the author had added and changed things after publication. In that situation, the appearance was given that the editor had done a terrible job, when in fact she'd done at least a "Good" one.

As another example, I have several times had to go back into my own reviews after publication in order to correct errors that were edited INTO them, so for those reviews, the editor appears to have done an "Excellent" job, when in fact it should actually have a lower rating.

Sammi, can you and/or the other EF folks think of any way around this? I'd hate to lose the ability to edit my reviews post-publication, but perhaps there could be a way to see the review as originally published before rating the editing work?

You are told that you didn't meet something if you get the decline email. But, for more specifics, you can message me or send me an email.

That isn't currently an option if you're over 5.5, but it's a great suggestion!

This is a good point - right now, there really isn't a way to tell what's been done by an editor and what's been changed post-editing, and I don't know how frequently this occurs. I'll definitely bring it up

I view it as the risk you take. Yes, the writer may change things back, but that's part of the system. It isn't perfect, but I think trying to add a bunch of things will make it overly complicated.

It's kind of like the fact that people sometimes vote the editor down if the review has incorrect information or doesn't include things they want to know. Can we do anything about the content of a review? No. Does everyone know that? Nope.

What gets me are the reviews that don't have to go through editing that have all "i" instead of "I" or are just one big collection of sentence fragments. It's a total lack of caring. Anywho...that's my gripe.

I'm with ya there. Some people don't have the pride to even proofread their reviews once.

I'm so confused with how becoming an editor works. I applied, but didn't see the option to take the editing test. I got declined, which is fine, since I'll just reapply another time. However, I was wondering if someone could tell me how to get to the test so I can try again in the future. Thanks! And congrats to the new wave of editors! :-D

I am so excited to have been selected as an editor! Thank you so much, Sammi and the rest of the EF team, for giving me a chance to prove that I was born ready to edit

So far, it's been a lot of hard work...
