Pictures - How do they affect my review rating?

Contributor: TheSinDoll TheSinDoll
I know that everyone is allowed to vote as they please.

I've always enjoyed pictures in other people's reviews and included many in mine.

If I write a review about a product that is similar to another product that I have, I often do comparison shots with them. That's a fairly common practice in the reviewing world.

I also include the actual measurements of the product that I'm reviewing, which is far more important than photos.

Unfortunately, someone told me in regards to one of my reviews...

"I thought the review was very detailed and wonderful, I just really enjoy size comparison photos with something universal, not another toy that not everyone has."

- Is this a reason to lower your rating on a review?

I wouldn't personally downvote for not having a specific picture that I wanted. However, I guess it's up to the person voting regardless of if I think it's fair or not.

I don't think it's a reason to down vote.

I might give you a point less, but usually not.

I prefer a very detailed review, pictures are a plus but they will not affect how I vote.

I definitely prefer size comparisons to be with items that I am familiar with or are pretty universal. (AA batteries, tube of chapstick, can of coke, etc.) I have seen some size comparison photos where a toy is compared to some other item I've never seen or owned - those are pretty useless to me.

Would I downvote based on 1 picture? Probably not. I might leave a note if I felt like it and had the time to make a small suggestion, but I figure that people are allowed to write any kind of review they want, and take any kind of picture they want. There aren't any laws, and I'm certainly not the boss of what makes the perfect review.

For me it would totally depend on the content of the rest of the review.

No, I think photos are great.

I recently got a snarky comment on one of my reviews based on my using a remote control for size comparison. I just shrugged it off. I have no ideas if they downrated me for that, and couldn't care less. Some people are just picky about EVERYTHING.

photos are great but not the only thing I look for in a review

I love pictures, some people have odd comparison pics that I don't always get but I don't vote based on the pictures. I'm really looking for as much information possible/helpful in the functions and performance sections.

Photos are a good addition, but my vote is based on the actual review.

I wouldn't vote it down for that. Even if that one picture doesn't give me any extra information because I don't own that particular toy it doesn't make that overall review less valuable.

I would not down vote a review for that reason. Pictures are a nice addition to a review, but they don't really factor in with my decision when voting.

Awhile back someone mentioned that I should put a lingerie piece (I forget which one it was exactly) next to something for a size comparison LOL! I was kind of confused because in my lingerie reviews I include a scary amount of measurements, my measurements, photos of the outfit, and if it's not too revealing, I'll wear the outfit in photos. I never would have thought someone would want to see a babydoll (or whatever it was) next to a pop can?

That being said, I don't plan on doing that any time soon. I feel like everything else I add should give you a great idea of the size.

I think that there will always be someone who wants more.

no, I don't think it's a reason to downvote a review. besides, aren't votes to be based on the overall usefullness of a review rather than on how useful it to a person personally? at least that's what I've been informed on in how to vote.

I wouldn't down vote because of that but those kinds of pictures are handy sometimes

Not at all. Images are completely separate from the review itself. If I rated on images, I would have to vote lower for those who don't include them. That would be ridiculous. Therefore, images are a nice addition. Doesn't matter what they look like or what is in them. They aren't what I am rating!

PICTURES ARE NOT REQUIRED AND WHAT PHOTOS YOU CHOOSE TO OR CHOOSE NOT TO UPLOAD SHOULD NOT, IN ANY WAY, AFFECT THE USEFULNESS OF A REVIEW!

Trust me we cannot please everyone!! Some of my reviews have more than 20 extremely useful votes and I always have to have the one review!

This. This. THIS THIS THIS>

We can't control how others vote, but I feel that I shouldn't have to include pictures. I once got comments and a lower vote on a lingerie review because I didn't include pictures of me wearing it. Um, sorry, I don't want to do that.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I don't downgrade anyone regarding their pictures. Of course you know I go overboard with my pictures, I compare to other items that are similar in size. I know everyone may not own the entire Jopen or Fun Factory line, but that's not going to stop me from picturing them all together. Keep doing what you're doing!

HUGS!

I think Beck and Badass summed it up quite nicely.

Many reviewers are actually having to change their taglines to instruct newer reviewers to vote on the review and not the product. If you don't know how to vote on a review, on one that contains pictures, or certain information, please ask.

No one is trying to change anyone's opinion, however, there are guidelines that have been given to us. Before jumping in - learn a little something. We've all had to do it and there are plenty of us that are more than willing to help!

I vote on the review and how helpful it was about teaching me something about the product--not the pictures. Pictures are only an added bonus--an extra bit of effort and time from the reviewer.

With indiglo on this one. I don't have a huge filing cabinet full of toys to compare other toys with (well...it's a small-mediumish), so a can of soda, pack of smokes, or something anyone would have near them would be a lot more useful than comparing it to a toy they may or may not have.

I wouldn't vote down on it, but I felt bad for the other option.

I know I got downvoted on a recent review for not having pictures, but I don't have a camera and I'm not comfortable with taking pictures of toys and uploading them to the Internet anyway -- that's just asking to get caught, and I want to keep my EF stuff private.

Personally, I don't think what is included in a picture is necessarily a reason to vote a review lower. I don't use the term down vote because I think that has a very specific connotation.

However, I also disagree that a picture can not be a reason to lower your vote on a review. Pictures are totally optional, but if you're going to include them, I'm going to judge them and factor that into my overall opinion. Let me be clear that I only lower my opinion if the pictures are what I consider terrible and actually detract more than help. Pictures that are extremely dark, completely out of focus, etc. If you can't get a reasonably decent picture, I would prefer it not be included. It's personally how I consider my votes and I have no problem if people disagree. We each have our own criteria as to how we judge a reviews usefulness.

Edit: I also want to add that most cell phones can still take very good pictures. The picture quality is generally only an issue when blowing up an image, which is not an issue for EF images which are typically smaller than the original. Also, there are free software program options available to improve image quality. There's no reason all reviews can't have good images.

I don't vote lower if there aren't any pictures I usually go off the information provided. I do however like if there are pictures that there is a comparison picture so that I can decide if the toy is going to be too big or too small for me. I don't expect everyone to include pictures many aren't comfortable doing that an so be it, to each their own right?! Many people like those of us who do lingerie reviews to include the size chart measurements and then our personal measurements, yes, in the past I have included my measurements but recently I am not happy nor confident with my measurements so I won't include those if someone wants to down vote for that whatever. Yes, it would probably make me a little aggravated since I am self conscience over my measurements and my weigh. I do appreciate those ladies who are confident enough to post their measurements, weight as well as photos it helps me. Not everyone is comfortable with adding in small tidbits of information that others are so we loose voting points because of that? I try to vote as fair as possible, if people say it fits "true to size" then I know its pretty much right on with the size chart. That is just my 2 cents for what they are worth you just keep doing what you are doing hunnie
