Who do you rank?
I find myself not rating the ones I don't like. I know this is wrong, but I can't seem to bring myself to down grade anyone's work. I only rate the ones I like.
9 times out of 10 it's on a product or class of products that I am interested in. Not the person writing them.
Sometimes I'll read all the reviews of a product and rate them "useful, somewhat useful and REALLY useful" in relationship to each other. But any review I bother to skim usually gets a good if it's cogent and articulate. I'm disappointed I can't give extra points to the ones that are brilliantly written.
However, if I read a review I don't find too useful, I have a hard time giving that less than useful vote, so sometimes I'll skip rating those.
I will also read and rate the reviews of my friends on EF. I have to admit that if I don't feel like I can give them a high rating, then I will just avoid voting. Fortunately, my friends generally write very good reviews.
I try to rate the reviews I read, but if my rating would be negative and I don't feel like giving concrit, I'll skip rating.
Now I do make a specialf effort to seek out my friends reviews and those who've been kind enough to read mine. I also read reviews for anything that sparks my interest.
I do, however, rate accordingly. I will not give a rating that I feel someone does not deserve (up rating them) and I won't always rate if there were many errors or it is a very low rating, unless I've seen several reviews by the same user and they are all poor reviews (lack of info, etc) in which case I will rate, or maybe just leave feedback about how to improve.
I don't like to rate if I don't care for the review due to lack of information, because often people don't think to add certain things into reviews starting out and just need a little help, and it doesn't seem fair to rate them based on early work. I try to be fair with my ratings.
