I think it depends on how much you can take with improvised toys or your fingers. I'm pretty sure about 1 inch diameter is pretty beginner, or maybe 3/4ths of an inch. I could be wrong though.

I'd say one inch is manageable by most in a squishy material. Harder materials you may want to go down a bit.

Oooh, I can answer this one!

If you're going with silicone/squishy material, you could probably manage 1" in diameter, maybe 1.25" or 1.5" if you're really worked up.

Don't use something hard on your first time. Period. Go squishy!

I would recommend something similar to this. It starts out small and gets bigger down the shaft, that way you can start small and go up as you feel comfortable.

Anything an inch or less usually works amazingly for an anal beginner. The Tantus Silk Small is pretty much amazing for anal beginner.

Fingers are good to start with. See how many you're comfortable with, measure around them at a point about 1/2 of an inch up from where the outside of your anus was, and then you have a idea of a good circumference.

Get something smooth, and if possible with a taper at the tip. An inch to an inch and a quarter is a good starting size to shoot for, since it's big enough to where you're likely to use it for a while. If you're not up to that size yet I recommend playing around with fingers a bit more as you learn to relax. That way you won't have a small toy that you quickly outgrow.

I'd start with something 1.25 inches in diameter. Not too big, not too small.

I have the Silicone Crystal Cote Butt Plug and it's silicone with a diameter of 1 inches and an insertable length of 3.5 inches, which makes it a good option for a beginner. It doesn't stay put well for long periods of time, but it's good for experimenting with anal play. Plus it's pretty cheap, only $12.99, so after you decide whether you like it or not, you can always upgrade to a bigger, more well made plug.

Either 1 inch for people who are especially tight or 1.25 inch.
