I've reached 2" with a softer jelly type plug, but I want to go further. I bought a 2.25" plug seeing where as that seems like the next logical step, but no matter what it doesn't seem like it's ever going in. It's glass though, so that might be part of the problem. Lube doesn't stick to it as well as glass is a near frictionless surface. Should I stay at the same diameter and simply switch materials?
Advice on diameter and material choices needed.

I have two glass plugs and I use coconut oil. Maybe try that? Don't use it with your jelly plug. I would look into a silicone plug that is 2" in diameter. Also, some of the advertised width/length/circumfer ence of toys are wrong. When I get a new toy, I always measure the circumference with a small tape measure and 100% of the time the advertised specs were wrong.

I'm personally in love with two items when it comes to pushing my limits. I'm a bit allergic to Jelly and some chemical compounds in it seem to be not so kosher. I'm a fan of realistic materials, so I' might get flamed by bacteria-phobics on this one. Anyway a good way to work up is an inflatable buttplug - Gapers organic and here is the Review. This is a great warmup and the pressure that it builds up inside you makes you want to faint from pleasure!

There are a few dildos out that have great diameters and are good for thrusting and are really stretchy.
1. Randy - if you're on two inches now, you will just love it!
2. John Holmes UR3 - I use that one only on very extended sessions, but once you're all worked up you can't really pull it out so good it feels.
Obviously toys used for fisting are fitting into your description, however this is not really my cup of tea yet (wanna try though).
Hope to have helped!!
Enjoy

Even though the glass is "near friction-less" try using a thick lube. Something like a butter (Not actual butter). The thicker lubes work better and can be usually used on silicone also.

Using inflatables are good but only stretch so far as they will inflated inside and outside rather that the actual hole.
You can try medical fetish for a stretcher if you have someone to help.
