Are glass toys safe?

Contributor: oliverHyde oliverHyde
I've always considered pyrex toys some of the safest around but after this article by Carnal Nation's Domina Doll (link) I've been beginning to question them. Even though glass toy breaks are supposed to be rare, I wonder if rare is good enough.

In the microbiology lab (and even more so in the organic chemistry lab) we chuck out a lot of broken pyrex. This stuff isn't supposed to break unless we really abuse it, but sometimes even brand-new pieces will break even if they showed no visible sign of stress. Now whenever a pyrex piece in the lab breaks, I can't help but wonder what it would feel like if it was my glass toy.

Do you think they're still safe even if they could break?
Are there ways of making them safer?
If they're not safe but you love your toy, will you still use it?

There have been several threads on glass toys breaking. here, here and here.

Most people have not have a toy break. I have- when it slipped in the sink while washing it. Two shards and extremely sharp, but that toy had a textured diamond exterior.

Some of the research that I did once indicated that it sudden temperature can create stress in the glass. The particular article you were talking about was talking about a particular brand of glass. I think that's a clear indication that when playing with glass sex toys you want toys with a quality reputation.

It's buyer beware, as they say. Some toys are hollow and dangerous, some toys are hollow and safe. Some toys are solid and dangerous, some toys are solid and safe. It depends on a lot of things. I recommend asking around and looking for reviews. Some people have had horrible experiences with glass, others have seen nothing but the best. The one thing that seems to be common is all the things I see complaints about and all the things I have issues with are outsourced and not USA made.

So as I said use your judgment. personally.. I only use toys I am sure are safe. Glass has risks sure, but I try to be smart with it, and I only buy from reputable companies. Try not to buy from nameless companies unless they openly state its pyrex and have good reviews online. The reason you wanna avoid that is because they usually buy cheap stuff in bulk and wont stand behind the product at all. Phallix, Xhale, Pyrexions, and a few other companies seem to be pretty well reviewed as far as I know.

I don't think any company sets out to release a product to the market that will hurt people. It would be reckless and just bad business to do so. That said, all companies... ALL companies in the business of manufacturing will have a defective item at some point or another. It does not necessarily render the product line unsafe or the company disreputable.

That said, glass is... glass. It can break, no matter how poorly or well made. I have seen several companies and toy reviewers recommend strongly that you examine a toy each and every time you intend to play with it for possible chips and cracks, which can weaken a toy and make it more prone to breakage.

I have even heard that simply dropping a toy on the carpet can weaken it, making it more likely to break in the future. So all glass toys should be handled with the utmost care and caution and probably stored in a protective bag by itself or only with soft materials.

The truth is, you have to decide for yourself if the risks of using glass are worth it. There is absolutely no data to support the idea that buying from a company with a good reputation will protect you. DBD, after all, had a Phallix glass toy break and Phallix is one of the better reputable companies making glass toys.

Glass is glass is glass. While I would say that you're probably never going to have a problem - I think that is only if you really treat it like glass. Avoid extreme temperature change and of course dropping it. For the most part though, I think if you buy quality and you respect the toy (always take a look at it, store it very carefully!), it should be alright.

Glass is super safe for other reasons - nonporous, easy to clean, its really a wonderful thing to make toys out of - but in the end, its still glass! They are beautiful additions to any collection, but should be treated as such.
