No preference, both are good. Most times start with a vibrator and proceed to dildo.

Depending what type of vibrator you get, it can also serve a a dildo when you aren't powering it - so I would have to say vibrator.

I won't consider using anything "realistic." While I have tried two or three dildos in the past, I no longer try them and have no interest in them. I like fairly small to average sized, smooth feeling vibrators.
