Girls: Feel strange about using dildo?

I am almost 30 now and much more comfortable with myself than I was a few years ago. But, in my early 20's, I was too embarrassed (I guess) to use a dildo, with a partner or alone. The first one I ordered online, I ended up throwing away because it felt too strange to use it alone. *facepalm* So, for years, I just stuck with my vibes, even though I really wanted penetration and to be filled when masturbating.

Now, all bets are off *snicker* and I have no such hangups with self vaginal or anal penetration. My favorite way to masturbate is with a vibe and a butt plug in.

Am I the only one who was too shy to use a dildo?

No, I am older (?) than you and I only vibe my clit when I masturbate. I have glass dildos and occasionally use them, but I seem to be clit/vibe only. I cant figure out what that is about.

I've never felt uncomfortable about it, fortunately. I'm only 22, so I had access to the internet from my early teenage years on. I think finding and reading sex positive blogs, and having a best friend that I could talk to about anything, really helped.

i used to be more comfortable with non-realistic toys. now i like both. but i'm still not into penetration during self play that often.

I used to be, and still am occasionally, too shy to use them in front of a partner, but never been shy about toys on my own. However, I denied masturbating for many years, I'm not sure why... seems very silly now!

I used to deny masturbating, too! I've always masturbated several days per week since I got my first vibrator around age 17, but always firmly denied it when the subject arose. Not sure why...too embarrassed, I guess. Silly, indeed!

I think it's totally strange to this day. Not to say that this stops me from using mine!

I think I'd be too embarrassed to use it in front of my boyfriend. Gosh I sound so much younger admitting this than I actually am!

It's never bothered me, honestly! I use them alone, with my boyfriend, via phone sex, on cam, etc. I have no qualms~ I love dildos and I love penetration while I'm playing with myself.

Not really. XD;; I first made a dildo out of a hairbrush handle and a latex glove in high school. I'm a bit pickier about materials now, but let it never be said that I was a shy one.

I did feel super weird buying a legitimate sex toy for the first time, though. I was on the phone with someone the whole time I was in the store, and I wouldn't even look the cashier in the eyes.

I've never felt emotionally strange about penetrating myself. Sometimes it felt physically strange, but I never had an emotional issue with it.

My wife doesn't like using dildos on herself. She says it's not embarrassment but I've always suspected that has something to do with it. On the other hand, she is not shy about using dildos for pegging me!

I think we're moving into a new, more open era where people can hopefully be more open about their sexuality, especially women. I think it's already happening with Generation Y. Sites like Eden are part of increasing openness, which I think is a very positive thing. I think the more open and comfortable people can be with their own (and shared) pleasure, the happier we'll all be.

I am almost 40 and never had used a dildo. Actually have never owned one. Mostly for the reasons you said. In fact, I still don't finger (penetrate) myself. I do love the feeling of my vibe in me and think I would enjoy dildos. I am now excited to get some and experiment. Glad you have turned a corner.
