In the realistic dildo department, I'm kind of like you: I prefer colorful and fancy textured, but I do want a realistic one, which I have not purchased yet. If my toy is to be 1 1/2 in diameter, I'd go with the Vixskin Mustang, and there is more selection of good realistic toys for a diameter of 1 3/4, like the Bandit and the Goodfella (they have balls and both in Vixskin).
I highly suggest toys from Vixen creations if you want a more realistic look, but when it comes to dual density silicone, the O2 ones from Tantus are just as fun and look slightly less real, which you might find interesting.

If you want something realistic, hygienic and comfortable, the flesh-toned O2 silicone toys from Tantus (Mark, Adam and Mikey) all fit the bill in their own ways. Mark is probably the most averagely sized of the bunch. Having tried the Adam for myself, he may be a bit big, and Mikey is rather girthy. Just saying.
They are a tad pricey, of course, but they have a lovely smooth texture and come in three great tasting humanoid colours.

If this is for pegging your husband, I would actually wait to get one until you know what he likes.
Some people prefer softer toys anally because they're kinder on the inner walls, but others (I'm in this camp) generally prefer harder toys because they're easier to insert. (Once you get into bigger diameters, being soft is a-okay because the girth means the softer toy can stand up to your muscles---but you're not going to start with a bigger diameter!)
I would recommend:
1st---work on digital play. You don't need to spend any money until he's comfortable with a finger.
2nd---get two small probes---the Tantus Small Silk, which is finger-sized and soft silicone, and the WHK Pleasure Pearls, which is a little bigger than finger-sized, and made of glass. See which he prefers.
