Well, the size of your first dildo is a very personal matter. It depends on how would you like to use - vaginally or anally. I, too, would say it's very personal. I have some that are quite realistic and some that are not, some that are so large that they are really pure fantasy (or for oral use) and some that are modest but remind me of penis's I once knew.
If I'm being practical, I'd also go for girth over length, but only slightly more girthy than the comfortable real-life versions - I try not to let my eyes get bigger than my... well, you know.

Here's our little miracle worker, btw. It's almost 3 inches in diameter and it definitely would take a lot of warm up to take this cutie in, but I'm betting it'll be worth it.
