I'm a little surprised to see silicone winning in the early going. We use to use silicone lubes and liked them because they never dry out like water-based products do. However I always had thin nagging concern that some of the silicone was being absorbed through the skin - so I stopped using silicone.
We use coconut oil for everything - as the name suggests this 'oil-based', but some think of oil-based as petroleum based. We've always preferred oil-based products that made from botanical oils like Shea & Cocoa butters - which are great but rather expensive.
Straight up coconut oil is a solid at room temperature but melts on contact with skin. Some is absorbed through the skin - but as a food product I'm not worried about that. It is extremely long lasting, but it's so cheap that reapplying is never a concern. Coconut oil is also slightly antibacterial - with all of the things going on in close proximity down there - it's a nice bonus feature.
Finally coconut oil is safe for all of our glass, metal and silicone toys!
