Do you clean your lube bottle?

Contributor: ToyTimeTim ToyTimeTim
We all clean our toys after use, right? Sure you do, at least I hope so. But what about your trusty bottle of lube? Does it receive the same attention after use?

I got to thinking about this the other day after a pretty long session of solo play. Seeing as how I was using a few anal toys and LOTS of lube, when I got done the bottle was covered with lube from my hands. I got to thinking that I do not always clean them off after use, sure I wipe them down with a towel or something but that does not really clean them, does it? Well, all my lube bottles got a health bath with my toy cleaner and an old toothbrush. I told my self that when I clean the toys the bottle will be right there with them.

What about you, does your lube get the same attention as your toys? Have you thought about this before?

My bottle of lube certainly does not receive the same cleaning attention as my toys get. I do rinse it off usually, but if I feel like it hasn't been abused too bad in the session, then I just put it away. I may need to rethink that strategy. Thanks for the food for thought, Tim.

I've only rarely had to wash the lube bottle when it got a lot of lube/fluids on the outside. Usually we're pretty careful and it's not an issue. I wish more lube bottles used a pump dispenser to minimize this issue.

I am a bit disappointed with myself, I never really thought about it before.

Agreed! Bottles like the one Maximus uses are much better, at least you can use your arm or something to dispense.

I used an old Lysol automatic dispenser before but it did not last to long. I think the Maximus was too thick or something.

I rarely clean the bottles, and not with a high level of attention. I think I'm afraid of getting the labels soaked and maybe they'll come off or bleed ink or not dry correctly?

That is a possibility, most thought have good labels. I am more worried about spreading germs back and forth.

You make an excellent point. Normally I do not, but after a session and the bottle feels a bit slippery that is when it gets cleaned. But you are right it should be as often as the toys.

My silicone lube gets cleaned most of the time for the same reason, you can feel the lube on the bottle no matter how long it has been on there. But water based lube will dry and cannot be felt for the most part.

I usually wipe down the bottle. Sometimes it is sticky so needs to be cleaned. Usually with baby wipes.

I'm pretty careful, so there usually isn't much on the bottle when all's said and done. I might give it a quick wipe-down if some lube does get on the bottle, but that's not especially often.

Yeah same here. The pump dispenser makes it harder to get the bottle grungy. I've cleaned it before, but rarely need to. I'm usually just a 1 pump and done person.

Great question!

I actually make sure never to touch anything with my hands except a towel or the toy if I'm doing any anal play. So I would never grab my lube after possibly getting any bacteria on my hands. I'm paranoid like that. But if it's just regular play time and my bottle got all lubey, I definitely give it a brief scrub down with warm water and a towel.

After a vigorous multi toy session, the lube bottles get the same antibacterial soap and water treatment as my toys do. If I've only poured enough to lube up a plug for casual wear, then I don't wash the bottle, just my hands.

I've never really thought about it to be honest. I think I've only done the wipe it off with a towel thing before, never actually washed down my lube bottles.

I clean our lube bottles with antibacterial toy wash. I also take off the cap and run hot water through it, and clean out the holes with something to get rid of the stuff that sometimes hardens in the holes.

Wow, I never thought about this before! I can only imagine our lube bottle has germs from both our bodies all over it... I'm gonna clean it right now! ACK!

no, because we only have to use lube once per session. so the bottle never gets dirty with body fluids.

Whenever I use lube, I'll only squeeze out a drop or two directly on the toy, then immediately wipe the opening with a clean piece of kleenex (with my clean hand). There's no way for the exterior of the bottle to get messy at all, as a person with OCD, I'm VERY careful with that sort of thing.

I just wiped it down with a toy wipe.

If I squeeze out some lube at the beginning of the session and then never go back to the bottle, then no, I don't clean it. If I revisit the bottle for a second application, then yes, the bottle gets washed in the bathroom sink along with the toys.

A lot of people said their bottle doesn't get "dirty" because they only grab it once at the beginning of the session. We have a different way of using lube, evidently. We don't use it at the beginning, or usually for early-in-the -session PIV (as more will come later). We also often switch to anal sex or play somewhere in the middle of the session, or while he's going down on me while using an anal toy, so of course, body fluids might be a problem.

We don't make love the same way every time, sometimes, I start to cool off, (and sometimes dry off) after my first few orgasms, while I'm giving him head, and then if we're going to go back to cunnilingus, or using an insertable vaginally during anal sex, we will need lube for the anal (of course) and sometimes for the vibrator or dildo being used for DP. The first insertion rarely needs additional lube, for us, but the bottle gets tossed around, sticky hands are on it and it's best for us to keep the bottle clean.

Also, our fav lube, Sliquid H2O Ride tends to form crystals or hardens a little in the spout, so it's a good idea to clean the cap and the bottle regularly. I really wish Sliquid would put out Ride with a pump. It would make things so easy.
