Hot Tubs - Sex, Toys and Lube?

Contributor: Liz2 Liz2
I spent three days in a borrowed vacation home complete with a hot tub. I anticipated an erotic time in the hot tub with my toys and b/f. I never used a hot tub before and have done very little with water play, other then the shower. Most of my toys are made of silicone, a few glass and stainless steel. I have been using Maximus lube for everything and I don't even have any silicone lube at present.
Maximus obviously does not work in H2O which resulted in severe vaginal irritation both from my toys as well as from my partner. Ouch!!
What is a workable, non-silicone lube for water play?
Any of you guys been able to enjoy hot tub sex without discomfort?
Seems to be the idea was far better then the experience, again ouch and still hurting

I'm not sure about the lube question, but I remember years ago hearing/reading/watchi ng something about the dangers of having sex in water. I don't know if it's true or not, but I remember that it said if you get a lot of water pushed up in there, you could become infertile.

Again, I could be TOTALLY wrong, here, but.. ever since I heard it, I've been too scared to try having sex in water. I have had sex in the shower, though.

Every time I've been penetrated in a pool or hot tub I've had irritation. I'm pretty sure it's because the chemicals that need to be used to keep them clean (even in privately owned ones) have no business being in my vagina. Accordingly, I won't do that anymore.
I don't have this problem in a home bath that has just been filled so that's why I think it's the cleaning chemicals.

I don't know if there's anything that would be satisfactory. Oil lubes would tend to mess up the water a bit as they melt off. Silicone would be the only "good option", but there can be issues between silicone lubes and silicone toys. Not all the time, though - Tantus did some tests, and they found that there weren't any problems with their silicone and Eros Pjur lube. I've done preliminary tests of System JO silicone lube on Tantus toys and had the following results: a patch that's noticeable even after water washing, but cannot be seen the next day. I'm going to look into it more, but haven't yet.

Water lubes, as you've found out, don't work.

So, the short answer is use quality toys with quality silicone lube or have your fun outside of the tub. If it's a bathtub where you're changing the water often then you can use oil lubes (as long as latex/oil-incompatible toys/condoms aren't an issue)

We used to have a hot tub at our house and I always ended up having penetrative sex outside of the water.

I've also heard, as Valyn mentioned, that having sex in the water can cause issues. I have no idea how much credibility those claims have, but I would be hesitant to mess with getting large amounts of chemically treated water in my vagina. Pool chemicals kill bacteria and killing off the bacteria in your vagina can lead to YEAST overgrowth. Yeast overgrowth = bad.

One more thing I can think of is the potential for silicone lube or even an oil based lube to really gunk up the hot tub filter. Back in the 80's when my friends and I used massive amounts of hair products full of all kinds of lovely varnishes, glues, waxes and stuffs, it left horrible gunk in the tub and clogged the filter horribly. Just something else to think about.

We have enjoyed sex in our hot tub for the past five years and have not had any problems. We don't need any lube although normally I do need some. I have not had any problems with infections or irritations.
If the chemicals are kept right in the hot tub, there shouldn't be any unwanted bacteria growing in it nor should there be too many chemicals to bother you.
There are lots of rumors and horror stories out there but I can speak from experience.
Of course, there are those people who are highly susceptable to infections or irritations and I guess those people will have issues, regardless.
We have used a variety of toys made of a variety of materials without any problems. Some of my vibrators seem to work better in the water-providing more intense vibrations. I love the glass toys too.
A lot of the lubes will clog up the filters and mess up the chemical balance so they may actually cause the problems with irritations. Again, we use nothing for lubes. Sometimes I will add an approved fragrance and have not had any problems with that either. But it is approved for the hot tub and has nothing to do with the sexual part.

I've always heard that sex in pools and hot tubs is a big no no. If you think about it, how safe could it be to be thrusting chlorine or other chemicals into your vagina?

Honestly, I feel like a jerk...should have known better. I did develop a yeast infection. I guess the water was over treated. Not a smart idea to push all that treated water into an aroused pussy.
Reflecting on the possible consequences, better over water treated then undertreated but best is to avoid it altogether.
