Information on cyclopentasiloxane toxicity?

Contributor: Antipova Antipova
Hi all,

I'm working on writing my followup review for Wet Platinum Bodyglide, which is proving a little tough. At the time, I found that one of its ingredients has a moderate risk of non-reporductive organ toxicity. I wrote in the original review that I wouldn't post the followup until I'd found the study that the warning comes from.
(The original source I linked moved its sources, so see this for the more current page.)

I have not been able to find the study condemning cyclopentasiloxane---b ut it is widely quoted across the internet. I believe that, since there are plenty of other lubricants on the market, there's no reason to risk the possibility of accumulative toxicity--- so I wanted to recommend some others.

I haven't tried any other silicone lubricants myself, so I actually just checked the ingredients lists of Eros, Toko, Pjur Woman, and Swiss Navy, and found that cyclopentasiloxane is their first ingredient. It's also the third ingredient in Better Sex Essentials Silicone.

So, are there any silicone lubricants without cyclopentasiloxane? Or can anyone help me out in finding an authoritative study on it? (I've only seen consumer guidebooks talk about it... I can't get anything that's been published by industry or academia.) Has anybody done this footwork already? Am I concerned over nothing?

Thanks for any help you can toss in my direction!

I'm not sure how much of a science background you have, but here are the results when I searched Pubmed for cyclopentasiloxane: link

I'm not sure if any of the articles listed are applicable, but you can also look at the references in each article.

Thanks for the help! My science background is pretty strong, the problem is more that, for the first time in years, I don't have freebie university access to published journals. The only one of these that has a free full text just uses cyclopentasiloxane as one of the carrier fluids for the titanium whose toxicity they're testing. I will dig deeper here, though, or maybe if I find a good one I'll find a friend who's still a student and can download the .pdf for me.

I found some more info at EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database: link

edit: if it's helpful, you can thank Selective Sensualist. I remembered her Anal Lube review listed resources to look up ingredients.

Is Cyclomethicone similar to Cyclopentasiloxane?

I work at a university and have university access. If there are specific articles you are looking for, I can probably get a PDF for you.

Specifically, cyclopentasiloxane is used as a surfactant in pesticides: it reduces surface tension of the liquid in which it is dissolved. That would explain why it would be used in lubricants.
