Lube compatability

Contributor: ToyTimeTim ToyTimeTim
I am planning another workshop, and I wanted to get everyones opinion.

This one will be about oil and silicone based lubes and their effect on different materials. Not to sure when it will be but I sure will let you know.

We all tell people not to use silicone lubes with silicone toys, but have you ever seen what happens? How about an oil based lube on rubber, have you seen the damage it can do?

Theses are just some of the questions I hope to answer. Sound good?

Let me know what you think, please? I will beg if I have to.

I am also thinking of making a master list that will have what lube works with what materials.

If you want to get an idea of what happens to condoms when you get oil based lube on them, you can try a fun experiment.

Take a condom and blow it up big like a balloon. Rub some chapstick on it, and rub it with your finger. It will pop in 10-20 seconds.

From everything I've read, using silicone lube with a silicone toy causes it to break down and get sticky. Try it on the base of your toys if you dare.

I am planing on putting it on more than just the base, try submerging half of it.
This will be a no holds barred scientific test, I will not be worried about the toys. I want something were everyone can see what happens so they have a better understanding of why we should not use some lubes with some materials.

This sounds great! I have always wondered how much damage I could really do to my toys.

You should make sure to do a "TPR silicone" toy and oil lube. Some manufacturers make a big deal about the silicone but don't say quite as much about the TPR, and when they're mixed oil lube can bring them down.

Please post some videos! This sounds really interesting.

Not all silicone toys or lube are the same either. For example, Tantus states that Pjur Bodyglide is safe to use with their silicone toys. However, I also remember reading recently that it is not compatible with their O2 line.

I did think of that but I am thinking that some of the damage will not happen instantly but more over time. But I will have lots of pictures.

I had thought about that, but this will be more of a general type deal. There are just to many variables to do that correctly.

Good idea! I'm currently working on a lube fact page on my blog. For this exact reason, we all say "do this" but nobody really explains why.

After the workshop, you wouldn't mind if I linked to the workshop from my blog, would you?

No problem. I am also compiling a "What lube with what material guide" I am pulling this from the site but it will be easier to glance at it and tell which lube you can use for a given material.

I've put silicone lube on silicone toys. It's not the end-all destruction that it's tauted to be. It'll leave a noticeable change in the texture of the toy; but it's barely noticeable.

I too have done some testing like that. Funny though, the next day it was back to normal with no signs of damage.

Oh I would so want to see that. I am always so terrified that I might do the wrong thing, and me being curious by nature, I would love to what could happen.

I would like to learn what could happen if one "accidently" did the wrong thing. Sounds like a great idea for a workshop.

I think this is a great idea! Besides, even if you already know about lube compatiblities, it will still be fun to see the damages (cuz I'm sick like that!).
