Lube Turning Yellow?

Contributor: Envy Envy
This is really odd for me and I'm hoping it's just me, but I swear one of my clear lubes is turning yellow. I have the Adam and Eve Personal Lubricating Gel and I love it. However, it looks like the lube is turning yellowish. It doesn't expire until 2012 and I'm not having any reactions to it either when I use it, both during and after. I store it with my other lubes in a shoebox under my bed, and the house never gets too hot or humid. And I've only used just barely 1/4 of the bottle for the smaller bottle Eden sells.

Should I toss it? Is it going bad?

Is it the lube itself that's yellowing, or some part of the packaging? You might want to examine a sample in good lighting.

I've had this happen with certain oils in soaps. The oils change color as they age but as far as I know, there are no negative effects besides the color change. I'm sure someone here can give you a more definite answer but my guess is that it's still ok.

I looked at the ingredients, and I'm not familiar enough with the properties of everything involved to guess what's causing the yellowing, but if you google them individually you might find your answer. That's fairly labor-intensive, though, so I'd wait to see if anyone here has had the same experience first.

It's the lube itself. I left some out to dry and when I peeled it up it was yellow-ish tinted.

I just worry because I don't want anything bad near my sensitive bits and get a UTI like I had one time (now i take cranberry caps every day just in case) or get a yeast infection or worse.

Is there any scent or odor to it?
Have you tasted it?

Yeah that hasn't changed at all. Still has the scent it had when i first got it, almost an apple-like scent.

Very strange. I have never had that happen.

Hmmm are you securely closing it each time? I've NEVER had this happen. I had a KY lube bottle for FIVE years. It was past its expiration and didn't turn yellow...so I would contact the company honestly.

Yep, all well secured. I have to make sure it's secure, I store it on its side in the box, I don't want anything leaking.

Yeah, I would definitely contact the company (Adam & Eve) directly and ask. Even though it is most likely in a fairly airtight bottle, it would still be exposed to some air from opening and closing. Oxidation from general air contact can cause reactions that can have a yellowing effect, but there are usually compounds in products to counteract that . . .

I did and am waiting for a reply at this moment. It's just really weird and I'm just afraid of contracting something using it now, though I love the lube.

Hmmm yea...better safe than sorry then.

Hmm. Seeing residue that is yellow after being left out to dry doesn't mean your lube is yellowing. Could be that that lube, when brand new, will dry to a yellowish residue. So here's what you should do - squirt some lube into a small glass (or if large glass, not so it pools on the bottom but on the side). Then hold it up to a white wall. Does it appear yellow? If yes, toss it. Water based lubes are constantly playing a antibacterial game with the outside world because their composition is tasty to bacteria. It's unavoidable. Don't use them if they've "changed" on you, as its better to be safe than sorry.

Yes, it's yellowish outside the bottle, I noticed it on a white toy I was using.

This makes sense. It could be the waste products from bacterial metabolism that is turning the lube yellow. Ugh!

Still no reply from the company. I just dumped the lube. Saving the bottle, though, cleaned it out real well.

Thanks for the help, guys.

I would personally toss the stuff.. Apparently the lube may be changing color because of enviromental factors such as air getting trapped in it and making it change color. I'm sure it isn't bad but personally if my lube isn't the original color, I'm going to go out purchase a new one and toss the stuff
